Installing Windows Server 2003 on an XP machine not working

Hi,

I have a Dell 390 which is currently running XP sp2. I am trying to install

Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard on it. I understand this must be a clean

install and not an upgrade, which is fine. My hope was to format Drive C as

part of the install. I have tried two approaches, both failed.

First, I tried installing directly from the MSDN DVD. Setup ran fine, but

after trying to start Windows, it gave a blue screen of death.

Then, I burnt a CD from the downloaded ISO image file, and booted the

machine from that CD. Setup runs, loading all the files, then gives a screen

which says it cannot find any hard disk drives and cannot proceed.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Dan

probably w2k3 doesn't recognize your hdd controller.

download appropriate hdd controller driver for this machine, 1) put it

on floppy or 2) slipstream into w2k3 iso image using nlite tool.

run your installation. if you choose way no. (1) then press f6 just

after you will be asked to do so and follow instructions that will

appear. no. (2) doesn't require any "f6-like" action.

hope this helps,

cheers

Hello dhurwitz,

You have to find the correct driver for 2003 from the harddisk and add it

during setup with F6.
