Guest Kappa Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 This might be a very novice question, but I'm just saving myself buying a new machine to do some learning on my own where I have Windows Server 2003 and some clients. Problem is I have only one PC at the moment. I plan to install Windows Server 2003 on VMWare Server on my PC which is running XP Pro. Can XP Pro serve as a client of Server 2003 (which is running on VMWare)?
Guest Bill Grant Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 on VMWare Server In a workgroup, probably. In a domain, definitely not. Personally I like to keep the host machine completely separate from the vms. I have tried using the host as a client for virtual servers but it is really more trouble than it is worth. It will work but as Bill said its more trouble than its worth. If you allready have an XP install CD then you're only limited by memory and CPU as to the amount of virtual systems you install. Why not create 2 vmware W2K3 servers and as many XP virtual systems as you think will do for your testing/lab needs. 2 is probably a good number too for testing various scenarios but 4-5 would be better. I have a D-Core workstation running XP with two NICs installed. It hosts three W2K3 servers in native AD mode and I have a hub connected to one of the NICs which serves as a vmware bridge. I have disallowed any bridging traffic across the other NIC and that serves as my link to the LAN for connecting in remotely if I'm too busy to go to the lab.
