mikeyorks Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Hello! Hoping someone can offer me some advice! I have a pc running xp service pack 2, it normally works pretty much spot on. Today i bought a Nexxus micro bluetooth dongle, installed it following the instructions for a system running xp. All seemed ok and it worked, then a msg popped up telling me i needed to run checkdisk which i duly did. Now my machine will not boot up, it gets so far then briefly flashes up a blue screen (too fast to read details), then it goes to the old safe mode etc start up screen, but whatever choice you take here it just repeats and cycles back! Just before safe mode screen it beeps three times?? Should i just take it outside and shoot it :) Thanks Mike Quote

KenB Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 3 beeps is often linked to a problem with the RAM. Try taking the modules out and trying them one at a time - attempt to boot on each change. Try the modules in both slots. You didn't say if this is a desktop or laptop. If desktop : switch off at the wall but leave the plug in to maintain the earth (ground) connection. Take the panel off and touch the bare metal chassis to discharge any static in you. Release the locking clamps ( often while levers ) from the ends of the modules. Take them out and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. Please restart your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 key to get the Safe Mode Boot options. You should now have a new option there named "Disable Automatic Restart". Please select that option and your computer will restart. However, now it won't restart after the blue screen. Instead, it will freeze on it. Please note down the information on this screen especially the error code. Post back this information as soon as possible. :) -- Goku Quote

mikeyorks Posted March 21, 2010 Author Posted March 21, 2010 Well i found my copy of XP, attempted a repair but was told there was an administrator password in place so was unable to proceed further. I can only think it was the guy who built the system for me did that? So i have ended up having to start from scratch! I still have all the installing and setting up to finish, not the result i wanted but i'll get there eventually. Thanks for the advice Mike. Quote
