SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

Recommended Posts

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP2, Comodo firewall,

Superantispyware, Windows Defender, AVG, Spywareblaster.

I was away for a week and when I returned my computer had alot of

updates and emails. I thought that I had gone through the updates

correctly when I got a message that my computer had a serious problem.

I tried to do a System Restore but nothing happened.

It went through 'a process' came back with this reply:

The System has recovered from a serious error:

BCCode:f4 BCP1:000000003 BCP2:871D0340

BCP3:871D04b4 BCP4:805FA160

OSVer:5_1_2600 SP:2_0 Product: 768_1

After it gave me the above message I thought it best to reboot the

system to make sure all was normal, but it didn't come back up

normally. Instead in came up with the following.

Checking file system on C:

The type of file system in NTFS

One of your disks (I only have a C:drive and DVD/RW) needs to be

checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check but it is

strongloy recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press

any key within 10 second(s).

1 of 3

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent

damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this

stop error screen, restrat your computer(I did)

If this screen appears again follow these steps.

Check to make sure you have adequate disk space(I installed a new hard

drive several months ago which has more than enough disk space) If a

driver is indentified in the stop message, disable the driver or check

with the manufacturer for driver updates try changing viedo adapters.

Check with hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory

options such as caching, or shadowing.

If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart

your computer, press F8(actually F2=Setup, F12=boot menu) to select

advanced startup options and then select safe mode. (F8 doesn't do

anything)

Tecnical Information:

Stop 0X0000007E(OXF66BAC27 OXF7C4253C)

thespud.sys-address F66BAC27 base at F66A2000 Date stamp 3b8d7887

At present it has been in the above CHKDSK loop for 48 hours and

hasn't moved from 1 of 3 !@ I can't logon to my computer or do

anything because it's been disabled.

I would appreciate any advice/suggestions to help me resolve this

problem. I can't logon or do anything! It's as if it has a virus and

Chkdsk shouldn't take 2 days to complete. I run my anti-virus and anti-

spyware programs regularly and have never had anything like this

happen.

In case you were wondering, I'm writing this at the library.

Thank you,

Robert

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

it sounds like you

went overboard with

"the protec-tion"

comodo firewall and

windows firewall are

probably both enable

and improperly configured.

you only need one and

i suggest the one from

microsoft.

next, you have a slue

of anti this and anti thats.

you only need one

anti virus and one

anti spyware.

i suggest avg and

spyware blaster;

though i use neither.

everything else can

be uninstalled.

further, because you may

have tried other anti virals

previous to those you mentioned,

they too could still be running

and without your knowledge.

after you uninstall some of

the softwares mentioned above

i would recommend running

a registry cleaner after rebooting:

If I were you at this point, I would boot my system from a free Live

Linux disk (such as Knoppix) and back up any data from the hard drive

that I could using the network or a USB drive.

<http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html>

After that, you might want to save time and simply reload Windows from

stratch onto your hard drive. When you do that, it will ask to

reformat your hard drive... select the Full Format option (not the

quick option). This will test your entire disk and remap out any bad

disk sectors that may have contributed to your problem.

Way too much protection. Start by removimg most of the softwares you

have and keep AVG and Windows firewall only. This will eliminate

software "interactions" which causes a "mix up" and possibly your

problem.

Then, you can start adding back your software but only a few

Comodo Firewall (new updated today) -- Turn of Windows Firewall!!!!

Windows Defender

Spyware Blaster

(skip Superantispyware -- caused more problems for me.)

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

I agree that saving your data via somehting like KNOPPIX CD or a Bart's PE CD wopuld be a good first step, just in case.

Next, Try running CHKDSK from the recovery console. The format of the commandf in the recovery console is CJKDSK C: /R. It may run for an hour or so, but should not loop.

Info about obtaining and using the XP recovery console.:

0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not

catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including

hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some

software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional

information.

I guess I didn't make myself very clear; while I appreciate the advice

concerning my antivirus programs etc this isn't the problem. The

problem is that Windows has been disabled and my system is in a loop

with CHKDSK and it will not stop or boot normally. Can someone tell me

how to get out of this and how to enable Windows?

I have tried clicking F8 and and starting it with Last known

configuration, and it went right back to CHKDSK, I then tried clicking

F8 and tried starting Windows normally and again it went right back to

CHKDSK.

No one had access to my computer. This all happened after I updated my

computer.

Perhaps you're right but I have found these programs have worked well

for me. I use to have just Spybot, AVG and Comodo, but found these

programs work better. I have uninstalled all other programs so nothing

else should be running, but again that isn't the problem. The problem

is that my Windows is disabled and the CHKDSK is in a loop and I do

not know how to enable Window or get out of this loop. All this

happened after I updated my computer.

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

if the computer is booting

in a loop, then it would be

necessary to know where is

to reboot occurring.

if it is occurring after the

boot menu, then perhaps

you should avoid the

regular boot and select

safemode.

if the reboot is occurring

before the boot menu, then

you will likely need to

use the recovery console

to bypass the windows

bootup and go right into

the disk system.

like the old dos prompt,

the disk system prompt

will allow you to run

commands that may

repair your operating

system.

I made no reference to your "antivirus programs etc". I cited some

references to help you resolve the STOP 0X0000007E error. Have you

considered or used them? The fact that you installed updates might be

merely coincidental to the hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver

or system service, or some software issues that have arisen.

That being said, can you tell me what version of Comodo Firewall is

installed? Can you tell us what updates were installed?

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

ok, so the chkdsk is

not completing and

keeps re-running.

but it is odd that

you were not able

to access safemode.

however, it is probably

due to that chkdsk fault.

what you might try is

to boot with your windows

cd and go into the recovery

console.

run a

chkdsk

then run

exit and see

if you can boot

back in and into

safemode without

the cd.

if not then the following

commands may be needed

fixmbr

fixboot

then exit and

try again.

(you can also type help

at the prompt to get more

info on these commands)

I apoligize, in my reply I was speaking to everyone as a whole.

I did look at the links you gave and it appears to be a capatability

issue which I don't quite understand since it worked fine previously

with no issues whatsoever. I don't know what version of Comodo I have

since I do not have access to my computer with CHKDSK running and

Windows being disabled. The updates were from Microsoft.

Correct, the CHKDSK does not complete and keeps rerunning. It looks as

if the computer is booting up but then it defaults to the CHKDSK

screen and gives me this message:

Checking file system on C:

The type of file system in NTFS

then if flashes this next message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent

If this screen appears again follow these steps.

hard

drive several months ago which has more than enough disk space) If a

driver is indentified in the stop message, disable the driver or

Check with hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory

options such as caching, or shadowing.

If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart

your computer, press F8(actually F2=Setup, F12=boot menu) to select

advanced startup options and then select safe mode. (F8 doesn't do

anything)

then it starts all over again. (The process probably doesn't take more

than a minute).

So far, I have tried clicking F12 with with a normal and hard drive

boot but it went right back to CHKDSK.

I've also tried clicking F8 and the following:

Safe Mode

Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration(your most recent settings that worked)

Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally

Reboot

Disabled Automatic Reboot After System Failure

Enable Boot Logging

None of these worked, when I tried the Safe mode it started, but then

stopped and ended at this line:

multi(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\Windows|System32\Drivers|agpcPQ.sys

I will try your suggestion and hopefully it will resolve this issue.

The weird part about this was the computer was fine before I updated

it. I'm wondering if it was the update itself that caused this?

Correct, the CHKDSK does not complete and keeps rerunning. It looks as

Ok, I tried your suggestion, I loaded my Windows CD and went to the

Recovery Consolehowever it didn;t allow me to type in CHKDSK, only a

sinlge digit number. I abitrarily typed a 1 to see where it would take

me, thinking I could always cancel, exit etc. but then it asked for my

administrator passoword. I typed it in but said that it was incorrect

3 times so I had to exit. It brought me back to the CHKDSK screen but

this time it said the following:

Checking file system on C:

The type of file system in NTFS

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel

the disk check but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To

skip disk checking, press any key within 10 second(s).

CHKDSK is verifying files (Stage 1 of 3),....

File verification completed.

CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3),...

5 percent completed.

I tried this a few times with the same results so I decided to leave

it alone and when I came back the computer was up and running!

This page also came up:

http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/Response.aspx/685/en-us/5.1.2600.2.00010300.2.0?SGD=c44f4dd2-2f0d-4af9-9739-5737c7414e83

Since I didn't know what caused the problem I decided to attempt a

System Restore but it wouldn't restore. So I uninstalled Windows

Defender and Superantispyware and tried it again with a different date

but again it failed.

Although I'm glad my computer is up and running I feela bit 'iffy'

about it, since it won't let me do a System Restore.

Thoughts/

Suggestions?

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

You probably are lucky that the system wouldn't restore to an earlier point

given the issues on the drive. They may have been corrupted anyway. Wait a

few days to see if the new restore points are usable. Your system may have

corrected itself.

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

ok, my apologies for

not explaining the

recovery console a

bit further.

here is link for additional

info of it. go to the second

section "how to use the

recovery console"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

basically, it entails

logging into the disk system,

similar to logging into

the windows system.

some people have more

than one operating system,

but for most regular folks

entering the number 1 will

log you into that line item.

then most people don't

use passwords for logging

into windows, so simply

pressing the enter key

will bypass those requests.

refer again to my prior posting

and once you get to the disk

prompt>:

run the checkdisk

also you might want

to run before the above

and then afterwards:

chkntfs.exe c:

-------------------------------

it is my belief that it

is imperative to complete

this checkdisk because the faulty

ones that had run numerously

and without success may have

created pending issues yet

to be resolved and finalized.

you can't be sure of anything

until a successful checkdisk

provides a confirmation.

just some added fyi:

the checkdisk and the

master boot record (mbr)

are linked together.

here is some read on

checkdisk which may

be enlightening.

were none. Also that I was able to make a System Restore Point but

wasn't able to strore it to an earlier date.

ok, I tried to do this again but when I entered 1 and pressed enter it

restarted the computer. I guess it does need the adminstrator password

and perhaps I don't have the correct one, although I thought I did. If

indeed I am putting in the wrong one I don't know where or how to look

for the right one or to change it.

Can I not use the DOS prompt? I only ask because the Recovery Console

isn't working for me, unless I've missed something along the way.

I found how to create a Administrator password in the Control Panel

and did so but it did the same, exact thing! I know it worked because

when the computer came back up it asked for the password before it

would finish booting.

Re: SERIOUS COMPUTER PROBLEM!

if you are using windows xp,

there is no more dos.

the prompt you are trying to

get to is the windows xp

disk system prompt that

can be accessed via the

recovery console of "any"

windows setup cd or

via emergency start up

boot disks. sometimes

i refer to its similarity with

the old dos because most

people are highly familiar

with this methodology.

---------------

it is unfortunate that an

otherwise simple task of

checking the integrity of

your file system directly

from the disk has become

a burden.

unfortunately, there could

many things that are causing

this to be a complex matter

and because there are millions

of combinations involving

hardware and software, it is

impossible to find out where

the needle is in the haystack.

what seems to be the best

course of action is to bring

your system back to its' basic

and tested functionality.

my suggestion is to:

1) get into you o.s. and begin

the process of copying all your

personal files off the disk and onto

cd's or dvds. Or if you have a

another partition or harddrive,

transfer your files over to them.

2) bring your pc back to its

basic hardware configuration by remove

all peripherals except kb, video and

mouse. If you have a special video

adaptor temporarily remove this as

well.

3) then reinstall windows from

scratch and install "nothing" else

that is none microsoft onto your

pc (including updates) in order to

ensure it functions without errors

for a couple of days.

the above could be avoided perhaps

with a "repair installation", however

your disk system has locked you out

because of the administrator password.

and though there are freewares that

will get you the passwords, if any, i

think that your system is doomed because

of the faulty check disks. so in my

opinion, it would be a further waste

of time trying to repair what you have.

another way to see this is that if

the method of reinstalling windows

was used several days ago, it would

have taken only a couple of hours to

get you back online. however, as

you can see, it has now been many

days struggling with this issue.

there may be a possibility that if

simply reinstalling windows over

your current one doesn't work then

you may need to format the disk.

the alternative to the above is

to buy a second harddrive and

simply install a new windows

onto it.

having a secondary windows that

is functional will provide you with

the opportunity to operate and

repair the dysfunctional

one or wipe it away.

Hello Robert,

I can feel your pain. I have the exact same problem as you have been

experiencing -- the computer continuously tries to boot (I only have

AVG and Windows firewall as protection). After clicking F8 and

"Safe Mode," the computer got hung up on the list of drivers. I

cannot escape that page without turning off the computer.

I am not writing because I have a resolution -- quite to the

contrary. Rather than to attempt a System Restore, however, I think I

will just buy another harddrive -- it sounds much simpler. I will

continue to watch this site to see if and how your problem was

corrected.
