How can this happen!

Recommended Posts

3 months ago I took my computer in to my Tecko Store and asked them to put a

new and bigger drive in and to load WindowsXp on it

They dropped my original C drive to D, Added a larger drive to C and

reformatted the disk and loaded a New WinXP

2 days ago my computer wont boot up just stops and shows 4 symbols in Dos,

so I take my computer in, they opened up BIOS setting telling me some how my

computer was trying to load up from D drive where my old disk is, So they

changed the boot up to my bigger Drive in C.

I get home Boot up , which it does now, but funnily enough all my old files

and shortcuts from my last drive are on desktop, then I open Windows

explorer and my small drive is now at C and my new Big drive D,,,,,,,

Confused........Thanks for any help Bob

Take it back to the shop. Hopefully you paid with a credit card and can

contest the charges, if necessary.

Re: How can this happen!

Philo I tried changing it to boot from the other drive (D my new drive, with

the new WinXP) but all I get is 4 funny symbols in Dos , something like a

"Y8Y8" so I have to change the boot back to my old drive with the old

windows to get it up and running..........Thanks Bob

Check the data cable,

it looks like the drive is not being detected properly.

Sorry, I'm confused too. Please try explaining the problem again,

being much more explicit as to what's happening.

Re: How can this happen!

My Computer was giving me trouble so decided to get a bigger Drive and a

complete install of a new WindowsXp, So got the tecko store to add a bigger

driver a install Windows, All was ok till a couple of days ago could not

boot up , just got some funny symbols, so took it back to store they change

the boot up order to my old drive by mistake, just thinking it must have

changed over, but actually they changed it to my old drive not my new , so

the computer booted up on my Old windows and its settings, so now I have all

my old setting, can access My new drive D for its data, tried changing back

boot up to my new drive but still got these symbols and no boot up, so now I

have changed boot up to old drive to get online here!,Should I re install

windows?....Thanks Bob

Bob:

I assume you're working with a desktop machine. If so, and you're reasonably

familiar enough to get inside your computer case and perform some relatively

simple connects/disconnects involving your two HDDs...

1. Disconnect the PC's A/C power plug from the wall outlet.

2. Get inside your case and disconnect the power plug from the old "smaller"

HDD so that the drive is inoperative.

3. Ensure that your new larger HDD is properly connected - as Primary Master

if it's a PATA HDD or to the first SATA connector on your motherboard if

it's a SATA HDD. Most likely that HDD has been already properly

connected/configured by that "Tecko" store, but do check it.

3. Power up the machine and make a fresh install of the XP OS onto your new

HDD.

4. Assuming that the new HDD now boots without incident and apparently

properly functions and has been designated with the C: drive letter...

5. Power down the machine and reconnect your old HDD. Ensure that it's

properly connected & configured as a secondary HDD.

6. Power up the machine and boot with both HDDs connected. Your old

now-secondary HDD will bear a non-C: drive letter assignment. Access that

drive and copy whatever files & folders you can from that drive onto your

new boot HDD. Understand that you will need to reinstall your

programs/applications - you cannot just copy them over from your old HDD.

7. Assuming there's no further data you want or need from that now-secondary

old HDD, just delete its partition(s) using XP's Disk Management utility,

create how many partitions you want and format same.

(Note that there may be one or more other ways to accomplish your objective

but the above is a "clean" way to do it should you feel comfortable with the

above process. But of course you can always take back the machine to the

"Tecko" store if you're uncomfortable with the above approach.)

Re: How can this happen!

you said a new install of XP resides on the new bigger drive, so open the

case, disconnect the old drive, check your jumpers on the new drive, to

ensure it's set as primary, and attempt a boot, if no go, what are the

errors, does the Bios see the drive?

if Bios sees it, try a repair install of XP, to the new drive.
