Hi,

My graphics card has just died and I am looking for a replacement...and a little overwhelmed with the choice of graphics cards out there.

Current (dead) card: Palit 8600 GTS PCI-E 512MB DDR3 HDMI DVI

Im looking at new cards and they have PCI 2.0, can i use these? Or do i have to stick to the standard PCI-E cards?

Can I just pick the best card in my price range and just go for it? Or will it not be compatible with the advances in technology since i bought this one?

Any advice is greatfully recieved.

Thanks,

Bryce

Hi,

To fully answer your question you will need to post the motherboard make and number.

If you don't know then post your computer make and exact model number.

Basically PCIe 2.0 is about 3 years old.

If your machine is much older than that then it is unlikely to be PCIe 2.0 compatible.

The cards that are PCIe 2.0 are actually backwards compatible with PCIe.

You would be able to use them but they would only run at PCIe speed and not at their full capability.

Hi Ken

Have a look here PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Cards Tested : How Does PCI Express 2.0 Scale?

I am very happy with my GTS250 starting around £90 ( which is kinda of revamped 9800GTX in old money :) )

Does need at least 450 watt power and with extra power cable to card ( like your 8600gts i think)
