pozzydrive Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Hi all My daughters friend has a problem with her laptop and I was asked to have a look at it, she was not bothered about losing any information so formating the drive and reinstalling was not an issue. I'll now go through what happened, note this might be a combination of software and hardware problems, so I apologise in advance if I've posted incorrectly. Turning on the computer it tried to boot up and as it went through the actions, a black screen came up with a bar at the bottom allowing for either the F2 key or F12 key to be pressed, if ignored eventually after about a minute a blue screen of death appreared very briefly, not enought time to read anything and then of course the computer would reboot, this happened over and over again, I tried going into each of the F keys, not really sure if I could have done anything when in each of the windows at that stage, I tried pressing the F8 key repeatedly to no avail, I had tried to get into the bios and if a dual sytem try to reboot from the second system, I think I managed to do that once before on another computer. Midway through all of this the laptop shut down, apparently my daughter told me it does this as if it is overheating, I raised it up off the surface and placed it in such a position as to allow for the circulation of air, never had a problem since. A couple of times the computer booted into the screen where you can choose safe mode, safe mode with networking etc, I tried each one but nothing happened. I then started to install windows by inserting the CD and pressing the F12 key, a window appeared which allowed me to boot from the disc, once started and it reached the reformat stage I tried to reformat the C drive, it would not and said there were errors on the disc, I tried this a number of times to no avail, it then gave me the option of partitioning, I did this leaving the original windows copy on the C drive as I could not remove it, I then completed installation on the drive, when looking in the "My Computer" it has split the drive into C and E, I shut the system down and tried to boot again, but it started to reboot all over again, I tried to get into the bios via F8 I could not, at the same time as it kept trying to boot up there was a constant clicking noise coming from the inside of the laptop, (note, the noise sounds like the CD drawer when it clicks, but it seems to be a little further inside the laptop, plus this noise was not there before) each time this noise came on it would not boot up and just did the same blue screen over and over again the same as before, at this point I was not aware of any connection between the noise and the laptop booting up, I kept pressing the F8 key to get into the bios and the computer suddenly booted up properly, I thought I had solved the problem, but as time went on I noticed a correlation with the noise emanating from the laptop and the system booting up, when the noise eventaully died off which it did after a time the system booted up properly, I'm stumped, and would like to fix this for her, I think that the first windows system may be conflicting as well, is there anyway of deleting it from the computer and only having the one on I have installed, I also did an sysstem error check, no results from this either, can I force a format and if so what will happen and if successful then rename the E drive to the C drive. Jelly Bean Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Hello and welcome. It sounds very much so that the hard drive needs replacing. If you install on E drive this could cause issues on booting up.Computers like to C drive as the main partition. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
