I have a son with two work machines that are operating differently.

Both are trying to run Auto Desk 3DS max design 2009.

An Acer (cheaper machine) has 4Gig RAM, AMD quad @2.3Gh, 64bit

The better machine is a Nova-tech 4G RAM AMDx4 @2.6Gh 64bit

The former runs this software fine and loads/saves the 3D file in approx. 30 seconds. The latter (& supposedly better) machine takes 6/7 minutes to perform the same function.

Just as he was ringing off he informs me that the software was initially installed on the Acer.

It appears other software seems unaffected - it's just this 3D design package that seems to be the problem. You may gather from this that he is an interior designer so this package gets used a lot.

He did have a yellow cross against the radeon ATI video card but a re-install seems to have answered that but not the speed problem.

We have managed to clear his registry and found a trojan (backdoor.sdbot) which has also been dealt with using the advice I've read/had from here before.

cheers

Hi Mij, I am concerned about the trojan, how was it removed? these backdoor things are notorious for returning and do need specialised help to get rid properly.

my advice at this point is to post for help in our malware removal section, just to have the logs analysed to check if there are other malware problems present.

Malware of that nature would certainly account for the slowness.

He used supermalware bytes, spybot search and destroy and then hijack this to see what was opening up. He also downloaded and ran Belarc advisor to compare the contents of the two computers.

He used the info I got from here previously with me directing him on the phone. He was going to drop the PC in to me but he reckons I can do it remotely from here. I'm unsure - I've never had remote control of a PC before and wonder if that method is 'newbie friendly' enough for me to go that route. We are both running his licensed Vista (this is one of his older clonkier machines here) so I can see no problems on that score.

I wonder what you think of this?

The only difference that I could see between the two computers was that one was missing two security updates. One of which did an E.T. and keeps calling on other sites. That'd certainly slow things up.

I have the same proggie here on this machine and it saves a 170MB data file to it's own HDD in 80 seconds. His cheap Acer does it in 30 seconds and his Onslow (but slightly better spec machine) takes 6 or 7 minutes. You can see the problem - alter something and save that mod then wait 6 or 7 minutes for it to be saved to your server. Oh yeah - they both save to his server. That bit may be significant - or not.

I have had similar problems, operations appear much slower when working with an Excel file there seem to be artifacts that confuse calc. Using the auto-pilot to convert the file to calc first seems to sort it out and everything becomes much faster.

RegCure Review

This is a graphics problem not an excel calc one. I think the two are different in their save/download procedures.
