Adding DNS role to a W2k3 R2 to replace an old Domain controller

Hello, can anybody help? It would be appreciate it.

This is what I have:

A Domain XXXXX.com with a cluster DC1 and DC2. It happens that DC2 is

acting up for whatever reason and it has to be replaced.

I Installed W2k3 Enterprise Server R2 in a new computer.After the

installation I assigned it its first role as a DC with Active

Directory.

Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how to install DNS and DHCP on

this server, so it is in hapy terms with DC1 (don't forget DC2 will

be

replaced by this guy). I did try to assign it a DNS role, but when it

started asking about zones, forwarding, etc I stopped.

Would anyone be kind enought with this old man and help me with as

much detailed info that you can, please?

That sounds a bit worrying to me. How did you install it as a DC without

DNS? If you installed it as the first DC in a new forest/domain it will

already have set up a new DNS structure for the new domain.

I would start again. Install DNS and create a secondary zone for the

existing DNS zone.

I would aim at getting it running as a member server in the existing

domain before promoting it to a DC. After that you can look at transferring

roles to it prior to removing the existing DC.

A detailed description of this is a chapter in a book, not a newsgroup

post.

If the questions about zones etc. threw you off, you're in to deep I'm

afraid. You might want to consider hiring a consultant.

Seriously, this is not something you're going to solve with a few

messages, and understanding DNS is just too vital a part of running and

maintaining active directory.

Unless of course you have the time and are willing to study, in that

case I would recommend the MS Press Exam book 70-292

regards,

Paul
