Renaming domain controllers?

I understand that the domain functional level needs to be 2003. What

if you have a root domain (root.com) and 2 child domains

(test1.root.com and test2.root.com). All domains are 2000 native. If

you wanted to rename DC's in root.com, can you just raise domain

functional level for root.com? Or do you need to raise all the domain

functional levels?

Re: Renaming domain controllers?

Since, as you pointed out, DC rename is a feature of Windows Server 2003

functional level, the target domain (i.e. root.com) needs to be operating in

this manner (rather than entire forest). However, there are some caveats you

need to consider depending on the number of domain controllers in your

root.com and the roles that are hosted on the one you are planning to

rename. For more info, refer to

Are you really considering on renaming the DC? That feature is available

from 2003 but its definitely not recommendable, there are a bunch of things

to consider and you probably found some issues in the middle.

If you absolutely need to, try to promote a new DC with the new name you

want to and then demote the previous DC.

Cheers

No, I'm studying for the 70-296 (sorry to be misleading). Thanks for

the replies.
