Mail Client problem

I realize that this is a Microsoft site but I thought perhaps someone

could help me out with a problem I have. Whenever I click on 'Contact

Us' on any given site it comes back with the pop-up message below:

Could not perform this action because the default mail client is not

properly installed.

The odd thing about this is that it use to be able to do this. So can

anyone tell me how I can correct this?

Thank you,

Robert

Not without more info... like (DUH!) your email client.

That said, this ain't the place to talk about email client problems.

Sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for moor info so I can steer

you to the proper place to ask your question...

Reinstall your default mail client.....(and what is your default mail

program for that matter?).

Can you give some examples of the sites where this behaviour occurs?

open internet explorer, go to tools click, on the crop down menu select

internet options, then choose the programs tab and report back on what

software is listed for use as default mail program.

It says that it's Microsoft Outlook . It also has options to use MSN

Explorer, Outlook Express, and Windows Live Mail but I use Hotmail and

it doesn't give me any options to change it.

Re: Mail Client problem

This is why it's giving you an error, since you haven't got any of those

setup for default use for mail.

actually mine shows Hotmail as the first option, and goes on to list

Outlook, outlook express. I prefer Yahoo myself but that's just my preference.

Since you are using this as a send mail program only, I would suggest you

choose whatever program your familiar with and set it up as the default

e-mail program to send mail. if it's set already to outlook, then you need to

configure Outlook to access your ISP properly to send mail, same with outlook

express.

You will need your ISP's domain name, and server names for sending/receiving

e-mail, you can contact them to get this info.

The setting is in Internet Explorer. Tools, Internet Options, Programs.

More details can be found by googling "set hotmail as default mail client

Even though hotmail may be set up as the default mail handler program, you

still need to configure it properly for Ie to log you in. go to control panel

and run the mail setup , look for an icon that says mail, double click, and

follow the instructions.

I went into the Control Panel but I didn't see any mail icon until I

switched to the Classic view. I clicked on the mail icon and it gave

me a pop up with E-mail accounts. When I clicked this it gave me the

option to add or change an email account. When I click either it gives

me the following options:

Microsoft Exchange Server

POP3

IMAP

HTTP(Connect to HTTP email server such as Hotmail to download email

and synchronize mailbox folders)

Additional Server Types

I chose the HTTP option but when I did it came back with this message:

This feature requires the Outlook Express component of Microsoft

Internet Explorer version 5.0 or newer. Would you like to download a

newer version of Internet Explorer now?

I have IE7. So now what?

I want my mail client to be Hotmail. Yes, MS Outlook is installed but

I don't like it and prefer not to use it.

Re: Mail Client problem

it certainly sounds as if it's trying to open outlook express and not able to

find it.

Try this, if you have your original windows install disk, put it in the cd

drive, goto control panel and add/remove programs click on windows components

and go down the list till you find outlook express, if it's already checked

remove the check as if your removing outlook express, see if it actually

removes it, if so reboot and go thru the procedure again to install it, this

should replace the damaged previous install.

I would also suggest you use SFC to check for and replace any system files

that may be damaged and or missing.

You may need to redo your patches and service packs

You've completely lost me. What does Outlook Express have to do with

making Hotmail my client server? I didn't think this was going to be

so involved e.g. putting in my original Windows install disk?!@! I

also have no idea what SFC is., I've already checked for updates from

Microsoft.

Some background: When the applications were in beta development, what is now

called Windows Live Hotmail was called Windows Live Mail, and what is now

called Windows Live Mail was called Windows Live Mail Desktop. (Yes, it's

confusing.) If you accessed your Hotmail account during the beta, it will

still be called Windows Live Mail on your machine.

In this reply, I am assuming that what is now called Windows Live Mail

(http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview) is *not* installed on the machine.

=========================

1. I understand that Windows Live Mail is one of the options listed in IE

Tools | Internet Options | Programs | E-mail. If you've not selected this

option already, do so now. Then...

2. Start | [Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs] Set Program Access and

Defaults | Custom | Choose a default e-mail program: Is Windows Live Mail

listed and selected here? If not, select it, OK your way out.

3. Reboot and test.

4. If no joy:

Restore Hotmail, Outlook and OE under Programs (Line 250, Right)

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Download hotmailoutlookoe.reg, saving it to your desktop.

5. Close all IE windows.

6. Double-click on hotmailoutlookoe.reg and accept the prompt to merge the

data with your Registry.

7. Reboot and test.

I went into the Control Panel and did clicked Windows Live Mail as you

suggested then rebooted and tried it. It seems to work somewhat, by

that I mean it does take me to an email but it doesn't look like

Hotmail. So should I do the remaining steps or leave it as is? I also

just recieved an update from MSN yesterday.

I appreciate the time and effort you've taken to help me.

Is Windows Live Mail installed or not? =>

http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

If a MailTo link (or the Mail options in IE) take you to

http://by124w.bay124.mail.live.com (after logging-in to your Live ID),

that's the new Hotmail interface called Windows Live Hotmail.

Yes it is, and from what I've been told there's nothing I can do about

it although at present it seems to be acting normally. Still from the

last response I'm a bit 'iffy' about it. I would appreciate any

comments or suggestions you may have.

Yes, I have Windows Live Mail. I apoligize for not giving you enough

information so you have to ask but you have to understand I'm a bit

frustrated here with two issues. While I'm not as computer literate as

some I think I can resolve issues if given instructions so please bear

with me.
