Activation problems

I have just reinstalled Windows XP pro SP2 (2002) due to system crash and I

do not have the option to 'Activate Windows' in the 'System Tools' Menu. How

can I activate? It seems that there may be a problem with the activate.exe

file. I am unable to re-install windows and office updates as a result. Who

can help?

Re: Activation problems

Is the copy of Windows retail or a copy that came preinstalled on the

computer? Please provide the details of your computer (make and model,

hardware, etc.).

Start > Run > c:\windwos\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

will run your activation wizard and from there you can choose to

activate if your copy of Win is not activated.

Re: Activation problems

The copy of windows is retail. The computer (Dell 5100 Pentium 4 640 2X512

NECC 533MHz SDRAM , 3.2GHz 2MB L2 cache 800MHz FSB- I think that's my

problem) came preinstalled with Windows home but was rebuilt at the time and

again just recently. The reason I had to re-install Windows is because after

the recent rebuilt (with the retail WindowsXP pro) I got a system32 error one

day at start up. Hardware on the PC is dual 16X DVD RW+/-RW Dual layer,

Ethernet card 10/100 D-link DSL-604Tmodem & wireless mouse & keyboard. Thank

you for trying

Yeeeeyyy, you have solved one problem at least - thank you. I get the

message that Windows is already activated. This eliminates that problem so

why is it that I cannot install the automatic updates for Windows or office?

IIRC, at this stage of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage drive, the

WGA(N) updates need to be first installed. This validates the OS and the

machine, making it capable of downloading and installing Microsoft and

Windows updates. However, one should continue to be careful and scrutinize

just what updates have been downloaded and primed for updating.

I hate to sound dumb but I cannot figure out what IIRC is and I have spent

considerable time trying. I have downloaded the WGA Notification application

and ran than OK. I must be doing something wrong because I cannot install

any Windows or Office updates - still.
