Guest Adam Raff Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Good Day, We are running Windows 2003 SP1 servers and I am slowly getting ready to upgrade these servers to SP2. After doing a lot of updating to get ready to update firmware and backup software as our current backup software is not supported on SP2 so I had to load .NET 2.0 on the servers to support the new backup software, I came across the read me file that states that if you have installed .Net 2.0 you need to run the update from the windows update site so that it will support the .net 2.0. Is this still true? Are there any other little gotcha that anybody can share Thanks in advance Adam Raff
Guest George Yin Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 RE: Updating to SP2 Hello, Based on some research, I find that this is true as described in the following article, Release Notes for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/0/9/80939c86-d75c-48a2-abc2-a1fe7e6 57171/relnotes.htm I quote it here for your reference: "If you are installing SP2 on a computer running SP1, to ensure that certain applications and components (such as Windows .NET Framework 2.0) function properly, install SP2 by using Microsoft Update (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=85856). You should be aware of the following bugs from SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939421 I personally recommend having the NIC driver up to date as SP2 puts the SNP (Scalable Networking Pack) in whether you like it or not. The latest NIC drivers will usually have the NDIS functionality updated to accommodate what's changed in SP2 because of the SNP. You should also be aware of the TCP Chimney functionality that SNP now has so you'll know how to turn it off if it causes goofy network issues. If at all possible, stay away from .NET 3.0 as it breaks things on printing with some apps. As of yet it is not fixed. If this is a print server or has print queues, you'll need some hotfixes after applying SP2. We've had good success with it since we applied it in August of last year. - Thee Chicago Wolf
