Storing Documents And Settings on a mounted drive

Although I've seen many threads describing how to move the D&S, I

couldnt find anything on the following. I want to mount a new drive

as C:\Documents And Settings. So effectively not change the setings

for D&S, just store it on a mount. Can this be done easily? (How

would it be done while the folder is in use?).

Many thanks.

Hello Red,

I don't think that you will be able to do so, because documents and settings

are being accessed by system even before you try to logon, and before

network drives are being mounted. Taking in account, that profile contains

some critical information like registry, i wouldnt' trust it to a network

connections.

You can redirect your "My documents", "desktop" etc folders to a network

location with no problems though.

Regartds,

Andrew

Its a drive inside the same box. Also, Its the whole of D&S that I

need mounting (for reasons beyond this thread), therefore moving my

documents etc will not suffice. I was hoping that moving it to a

mount would be a lot more straightforward than moving it to another

location entirely. I live in hope!

Re: Storing Documents And Settings on a mounted drive

Well, as i said previously

Moving to a network mounted drive is not possible, because the server and

workstation services startup a bit later, than `system` tries to access it's

profile (yes, system account has a profile as well), so if the drive is not

available, system service is screwed.

If you want to relocate profiles permanently, you could start playing NTFS

tricks like mountpoints etc, and then relocate profile to a mountpoint, but

moving to a network share (even if it's a local machine) is not possible.

Hope this helps,

Andrew
