XP update problem

I recently downgraded from Vista to XP SP2 on a Sony VAIO and was extremely

happy with the results. It was like seeing an old friend to get back to XP

after nearly a year with Vista. But, due to a hardware problem (as yet

unidentified), my XP O/S got corrupted and I was required to do a Repair in

order to boot again. Now, everything seems to be back to normal except I am

unable to make any XP Updates. Every day, the system tells me there are 89

updates downloaded and ready to install. Then, after I allow the install to

go forward, it gives me a list of updates that were unable to be installed.

The list is over 75 updates and may well be 89 updates. It's a little

difficult to count them. I wonder why it will not update any of them? I

reviewed my "Update history" and the only successful update shown is the

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.

My "hardware" problem is that after being idle for a while (maybe :30

minutes) the computer hangs with a blank screen and the disk activity light

on full burner. The only way to get going again is by powering off and back

on (hence, the corrupted O/S). I have disabled all hibernate and sleep

modes. Any suggestions?

TIA,

Tom

Re: XP update problem

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP

installation:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
