When we install virtual server it will only install on the C: partition. We

partitioned the host with the idea of putting the virtual servers on the D:

partition. Is there a way to override the install on C:?

RE: MS Virtual Server

Hello David,

Thank you for posting in newsgroup.

According to the description, your concern is that if Virtual Server 2005

can be installed on another partition besides partition C:

If I have any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

Based on the research, here is some information which may be helpful for

you.

Analysis:

=====================

By default, Virtual Server 2005 will be installed in the location

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server" when the "Complete" option is

selected as the "Setup Type" in the "Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Setup"

wizard. However, you may customize the installation location by selecting

"Custom" option as the "Setup Type".

Also, if you have already installed Virtual Server 2005 on partition C: and

want to move it to another partition, please uninstall it first and then

perform a brand new installation.

Here are some steps for your reference.

Steps:

=====================

1. Launch the installation application by double click on the "Setup.exe"

of Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2.

2. Click on button of "Install Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1".

3. Select the option to accept the terms in license agreement.

4. Click Next and then input the Customer Information.

5. Click Next and then select the "Custom" option as the "Setup Type"

6. Click Next and the wizard will go to the "Customer Setup" step.

7. You may click on "Chang¡" button to customize the installation location

of "Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2"

8. You may input the Folder name (ex. D:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual

Server\) under the button of the "Select Destination Folder" to adjust the

target installation location.

9. Click OK to finish the installation.

Re: MS Virtual Server

Although the Virtual Server application itself is installed in the c

partition, you can put the files that comprise the Virtual Machines hosted

by Virtual Server wherever you want to.

Using the Virtual Server Administration Web Site, when you create a new

Virtual Machine, you can key the full path and name of where you want the

Virtual Machine Configuration file to go (e.g. d:\VirtualMachines\VM1\VM1).

Similiarly, when you create a Virtual Disk, you can specify where you want

that Virtual Disk to be - the default is the folder you specified for the

Virtual Machine Configuration file.

Alternatively you can specify the default folder in "Server Properties",

"Search Paths", "Default virtual machineconfiguration folder".

If you are using VMRC Plus instead of the Virtual Server Administration Web

Site, you can do the same thing, but the dialogs are somewhat different.

Personally, I prefer VMRC Plus (downloadable for free from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=80adc08c-bfc6-4c3a-b4f1-772f550ae791&DisplayLang=en).

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
