Both my partner and I suddenly have "low disk space" messages showing. We are at separate locations, and it seems very coincidental that this has suddenly happened to both of our laptops. Having Googled it and looked on this forum we seem to be convinced that this is some sort of virus.

I have deleted programmes that I've had for a long time and other files/folders, but it seems to make no difference. Neither of us have done anything to our laptops except exchange messages.

I have run AVG etc deleted temp internet files etc etc all to no avail.

Is this some form of virus ... and if so, is there a deletion tool?

Thanks Mike

Hello, mikeywikey

Welcome to the FreePCHelp Forums. My name is Thomas (Tom is fine), and I will be helping you fixing your problems.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:

  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.

Hi Tom,

Many thanks for your anticipated help. I hope I have followed your instructions correctly. You will see I had to send each report in two sections. I trust that's okay?

If all works out well, then may I repeat the same procedure with my partners laptop?

I will of course make a donation if all works out okay.

Kind regards,

Mike

Here I am :D

Let's check for some hidden thingys, then we can start fixing the problems.

Download GMER from Here. Note the file's name and save it to your root folder, such as C:\.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with this file.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Allow the driver to load if asked.
  • You may be prompted to scan immediately if it detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "No", save the log and post back the results.
  • If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
  • On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
  • When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as Results.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
  • Exit the program and re-enable all active protection when done.

Hi,

446.00 Mb Total Physical Memory | 248.00 Mb Available Physical Memory | 55.00% Memory free

1.00 Gb Paging File | 1.00 Gb Available in Paging File | 70.00% Paging File free

Paging file location(s): C:\pagefile.sys 672 1344 [binary data]

%SystemDrive% = C: | %SystemRoot% = C:\WINDOWS | %ProgramFiles% = C:\Program Files

Drive C: | 26.38 Gb Total Space | 2.37 Gb Free Space | 8.98% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT32

Drive D: | 26.55 Gb Total Space | 26.23 Gb Free Space | 98.77% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT32

Quoted from the OTL logfile.

That means you run 512 MB RAM, thats not enough.

Your c: drive has 26 GB disk space and 2,37 of them are free. That is also not enough for XP.

XP runs with 512 MB RAM, 1 Gb or higher is better. Also, XP alone needs 10 GB disk space, that means you only have 16 GB left for programs and data.

I've never had this problem before, and that's after I got rid of a load of programmes. I have only a few on here now. And I don't understand why my partner also suddenly has the same problem with hers ... saying 'low disk space'. Maybe I need a new hard drive?
Posted
I just don't understand why. It's only recently come up with this 'low disk space' ... I've not added anything, in fact I've deleted several programmes to no avail. Why also is my partners' laptop telling her the same. Too coincidental I think. There must be something wrong somewhere ... surely after all this time it doesn't suddenly come up with this low disc space message. Do I need a new hard drive perhaps?

So you not getting this message anymore? Please post back with a fresh OTL logfile.

Sorry to interrupt but I happened to notice something that is probably unrealated but I thought I would mention it.

Drive C: | 26.38 Gb Total Space | 0.27 Gb Free Space | 1.02% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT32

Drive D: | 26.55 Gb Total Space | 26.23 Gb Free Space | 98.77% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT32

Drive C: | 26.38 Gb Total Space | 2.37 Gb Free Space | 8.98% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT32

Drive D: | 26.55 Gb Total Space | 26.23 Gb Free Space | 98.77% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT32

Aside from what was already said about having almost no free space left on the C drive which might be the reason for the low disk space message I notice your system is set up as FAT32 instead of NTFS on both drives. NTFS would be the preferred file system.

Before I run OTL again and bearing in mind what RandyL has added, I thought I would also add this information >>> I clicked on Properties of C drive and this gave the following information under the General tab:

Type: Local disk

File system: FAT32 (I have never knowingly changed this from NTFS)

Used space: 26,753,744,896 bytes 24.9 Gb

Free space: 1,568,489,472 bytes 1.45 Gb

Capacity: 28,322,234,368 bytes 26.3 Gb

Furthermore the total Gb's of my installed programmes are 1,512.84MB

Temporary Internet Folder is empty.

As a point to note. My partner and I have been Googling "Low disk virus" but have not seen any conclusive answers, but many have taken the steps to reformat their hard drives. Is this an option for me?
