Hi There,

I am thinking of turning on folder redirection to point various

desktop folders to the server. If people have laptops does it sync the

next time they are connected? I have had nightmares with ActiveSync

and Offline Folders in the past.

I'm trying a new usenet client for Mac, Nemo OS X.

You can download it at http://www.malcom-mac.com/nemo

Activesync has nothing to do with this - but offline files might. Put your

laptops in another OU and use group policy with loopback processing, so the

desktop & application data don't get redirected (My Documents is OK if you

also enable offline files & are aware of the risks).

(note that "offline folders" will generally be presumed to refer to older

versions of Outlook/OST files)

Has this been changed much in 2008? I really dislike the offline files

function as I dont think it works too well.

I don't know about 2008. The issue is often with the *client* side. I don't

like offline files much either - you could use your same (loopback!) group

policy to redirect users' My Documents to c:\data and sync it to

\\server\user\My Documents using something like SecondCopy

(http://www.centered.com) or robocopy script (via GPO?)

RE: Folder redirection

Hello Craig:

Thanks for posting here.

Folder redirection group policy setting will not be refreshed in the group

policy periodical background refresh. It is only applied during the user

log on process. This means if a power-on laptop user connects, the folder

redirection setting will not be applied until user log off and re-log on to

the computer.

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista have new user profile structure (user

profile version 2). More folders such as Contacts, Desktop, Documents,

Downloads, Favorites, Music, Videos, Pictures, Searches, AppData, Links and

Saved Games can be redirected while only four folders (Desktop, My Music,

My Videos and My Pictures) are applicable in Windows XP and Windows Server

2003 by Group Policy folder redirection.

For more information about folder redirection in Windows Vista and Windows

Server 2008, you can refer to:

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Miles Li
