Indexing service - is it used by Windows?

Is the indexing service used internally by Windows 2003 Server? I've just

set-up a new Windows 2003 Server and the System catalogue contains c:\ which

means it indexes the entire C: drive. Why does it do this, can this be

deleted and does it cause problems with using the web catalogue? When you

search a catalogue using the webbot, does it just search the web catalogue?
