windows explorer deleting whole folders on network computer

i'm running vista home premium, connecting to a computer running xp

pro on our local network. for the 4th time in 5 days, i have tried to

delete a file on the xp computer using windows explorer, and instead,

the whole folder where the file resides gets deleted. no "are you

sure..." prompt or anything. it just isn't there anymore. i do a

search (on the xp computer) and the folder and files are nowhere. the

first 3 times this happened, i ran 2 different undelete utilities and

nothing was found with either. oddly enough, today, i ran the

undelete utilities and they both found my folder.

i do not believe i am accidentally deleting the folder. specifically

today, i was working very carefully not to mis-type a button, and

waiting for windows explorer to "catch up" as there is a delay across

the network.

anyone have any idea what is going on? i'm terrified to work across

the network now...

thanks in advance,

kelli norman

You should probably take this to a Networking NG. But a few thoughts:

- Try typing Ctrl/Z the next time it happens; that should undo the last

action.

- F5 might refresh the folder view and show the missing folder..

- Try a right-click, "Delete" as a test.

- Try dragging the file to the Recycle Bin, if it's easily viewed, and

see if the folder is dragged with it.

- The Properties of the Recycle Bin contains the "Display Delete

Confirmation Dialog" option, but this may not help across a network.

thanks joe. will try the ctrl/z and f5 next time. but hopefully

there won't be a next time.

tried dragging to recycle bin, rt-click/del, del button - they all

worked fine. 1 file deleted, got the conformation. when it crazy-

deletes, i get no confirmation.

i've been accessing/deleting files for 6+ months now under this

environment with no problems. this just started about 3 weeks ago.

obviously something's changed, but i don't know what. both computers

have antivirus software which does automatic updates, and both have

windows set to auto-update daily. if i ever find out what's

happening, i'll repost.

thanks again.
