Error checking/scandisc problem

When I recently tried to run the error checking function from My

Computer. I set it to "Automatically fix system errors" and "Scan and

attempt recovery of bad sectors" and then rebooted the PC as per

usual. Then after restarting it reached the blue screen where it

normally goes though the error checking and repair process and the

message "Cannot open volume C direct access" appeared. It then

continued without completing the error checking and repair process.

A few days before this I installed Zone Alarm firewall and think this

could be causing the problem so I uninstalled zone alarm but the

problem still persisted. Defragmentation and everything else in

running fine.

 

A friend suggested I run scandisc in safe mode. Is this possible?
