mattatuni Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Hi My system origionally dual booted XP 64 bit and Windows 7 64Bit. Each OS was on a different hard drive, and whern the pc booted up it gave me the option of selecting the OS i wanted to use. However,,,, I recently overwrote the XP 64 bit installation with a 32 bit version (for work purposes) but now I seem to have lost the ability to boot from my other hard drive which has windows 7 on it, Every time i boot the PC up it uses the XP 32 bit that I installed, with no option to switch to Windows 7 at start up, (I have tried booting from the hard drive that windows 7 is on, but it still boots from the hard drive that Xp is on) Can anyone help me? Jelly Bean Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 The issue maybe the computer trying to reconise 32 bit and 64 bit, there maybe a conflict. You may of written over the MBR in windows 7. I sugest a repir install of Windows 7. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
Starbuck Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 (edited) This is fairly common when installing an older version of Windows after the latest version. You will need to repair the Windows 7 boot procedure. I'm not sure about Windows 7 as i haven't got around to using it yet. But the procedure with Vista was: unfortunately installing XP after Vista overwrites Vista's ability to boot. To reinstate the Vista boot facility.... reboot the pc with the Vista disc in. Then from the main installation screen, click on ...'Repair your Computer'. This will now fetch up the 'System Recovery Options'. Select... Microsoft Windows Vista and click ... Next. From the list of tools that comes up... select... Startup Repair. It'll only take a few seconds to run. Then take out the disc and click on ...Finish. Now your pc will boot into Vista instead of XP by default. But will give a startup option for XP I'm thinking it may well be similar with Windows 7.
