Windows starts but cannot get to login screen

Recommended Posts

I am working on my daughter's computer. Problem, I told here to let the

internal battery drain down (to keep the lithium battery from getting a

memory issue).

Now when the computer boots (form Last know good configuration or Start in

Normal mode)...it gets to the point where Windows will start -- It says

Micorsoft Windows XP -- has the flag -- and the progress bar with the

scrolling blue bars goes for about 30 seconds and then it just hangs. I

cannot get to the login point. When I try starting it in other modes (like in

safe mode, I get lots of things like:

multi(0)disk(0)rddisck(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\compbatt.sys

BATTC.sys

intelide.sys

PCIIDEX.sys

MountMngr.sys and the list goes on.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

First off, lithium batteries don't get a "memory issue", so that was not

a good idea. IF you have a true operating system CD you could do a

repair install. If not the restore procedure from the factory may be

able to a "repair restore" check with tech support. Otherwise the

factory restore CD will put it back to day one.

What does the list end with? That's probably what failed.

Hey Avi, thanks for the response. If I wait about five minutes...it will

actually allow ne to login. I am runningall kinds of PC Pitstop optimize,

disk cleanup, C disk, Tools> check disk etc... I also deleted alot of

unnecessary start-up files she had going. Ran all the anit-virus, Spybot

etc... I am going to do the disk check now and hopefully the reboot process

will speed up. I'll send a message about what the list ends with (I wish

there was a way to copy and paste it...but I'll do my best and get back with

you. Thanks for all.

Re: Windows starts but cannot get to login screen

Here is where I am at. After doing a “disk check” repair automatically etc..

I go this message on start-up:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage

to your computer.

A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or

been terminated.

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your

computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If

this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for

any windows updates you may need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or

software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you

need to use safe mode to remove or…that is as far as I go before it restarted.

It seems to restart…but only after it hangs for about five minutes on the

blue progress bar (before I get into the login screen). I was hoping to get

the error message at the bottom, but it restarted automatically on me. Any

advice is appreciated!

Thanks

Duane

Turn off the restart on error feature.

Go to Control Panel - System icon - Advanced Tab.

In the Start up and Recovery Section click on Setup button

Uncheck the box "Automatic Restart"

This should then give you time to write down the error message.

Re: Windows starts but cannot get to login screen

Here are some of the recent

errors. If necessary, I can stat-up in other modes and do screen shots and

post them online if necessary.

I do not have the original copy of the XP disk -- although I have a license

number and it is legit etc.... Hope I do not have to reinstall everything!!

Thanks again
