Hi, I just had a new custom pc built and used the powersupply from my old pc which was also custom built

now with both pc's the pc keeps restarting randomly at first I thought it was a virus but even with no hard drives connected the pc keeps restarting itself I disconnected all hardware like the dvd drive and all hard drives. with the new pc built I thought let me put in a new hard drive just incase it was a virus issue. the pc just randomly reboots

Can the powersupply cause any problems like this which causes the pc to restart all the time?

If the fault is happening on two different computers but using the same power supply, it certainly points at there being an intermittent fault on the power supply. I would certainly try a new one.

I have just put in the new powersupply

the pc worked just fine but then the same problem started all over again

I was using the same dvd drive but disconnected that and still had the same problem the case is the same as well.

I now have changed everything and still got the same problem

could it be a virus? but the pc still reboots itself even when its booting up

anyone have any idea's what it could be

by the way am not a wizard at a pc so please try to explain in simple terms.

thanks

Hi,

Disconnect all external devices - printer etc.

Take all cards off the motherboard except the Video Card ( if there is one ).

Take the RAM modules out - clean the contacts with a pencil eraser - and replace JUST ONE module.

Disconnect the DVD drive.

If you have any secondary hard drives disconnect them too.

You should now have just the basics for booting up.

Try the system - if you still get the same problem try the other RAM module.

If the system runs OK try swapping the RAM over. If it restarts now you have located the problem.

If all is ok so far....

Put the hardware / connections back one at a time ( booting up after each one ) until the system reproduces the problem.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Rebooting at random intervals does point to a heat issue, did you apply thermal paste on the CPU before fitting the heatsink?

It can sometimes point to a PSU issue, but its more common when say the 8/4 pin ATX cable is not connected to the socket near the CPU...

check and double check all wires - dont have any crossthrough/splitter cables attached to HDDs and if you have any USB devices make sure that they are unplugged as they draw power from a certain rail on the PSU and can cause the PC to reboot if they draw too much

I did not always think it was a heat issue as even if the pc was booting up I could get the same problem

but Ken B Thank You

I did what you said and i got soo angry as I stripped the whole pc and still had the same problem

and then I noticed (light bulb moment)

The reset button re starts the pc so i cut the wires off

I am no longer using my sisters laptop to write this

but my own desktop pc
