Dear all,

I have Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1. I have

problem with Network Adapter so I change the new one. After changing,

I configure its IP Address the same as the broken one.

The result is, it has the message said something like that IP Address

is already exist in another Network Adapter and the old one (the

broken one) I already threw it aways.

So, anyone has met that problem or know how to solve it please help

me. It's urgent for me.

Thanks in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Susan

Is the old card still in the Device Manager and/or Network Connections? If

so, disable/remove it.

This is a notification you get when configuring the IP details

of the new card. It is not a problem and you can safely

ignore the message. By the way, it's a good idea to note

down such messages verbatim before posting. It gives

potential respondents much more to go by than writing

"the message said something like ..." (which is the way

end users tend to report problems).

Dear Pegasus,

The message is :

Microsoft TCP/IP:

The IP address 192.168.X.X you have entered for this network adapter

is already assigned to another adapter "Realtek PTL8169 Gigabit

Ethernet Adapter". "Realtek RTL8169 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter" is

hidden from the network connections folder because it is not

physically in the computer. If the same address is assigned to both

adapters and they both become active, only one of them will use this

address. This may result in incorrected system configuration.

Do you want to enter a different IP address for this adapter in the

list of IP addresses in the Advanced dialog box?

Please help me to solve this problem. I have no idea about this.

Thanks in advance,

Susan

As I said before, this is a warning message that you can

safely ignore. After all, only one of your adapters is active!

Yes, thanks for your advice. But seems my ISA clients on all PCs do

not work and when I ping to that ISA Server (server which I change new

network adapter) it says "Request timed out". So, what is that

problem? Can you give me other advice about this?

Thanks,

You should start with the standard trouble-shooting procedures:

- Examine the output from the command ipconfig /all

- Examine your firewall settings

So far you've reported nothing about those.

After I do ipconfig /all, the out put is the same as what I did as

Static IP Address that it shows the message this IP is already exist

on another Network Adapter.

But, when I ping it from client, it says "Request timed out". I also

can not remote.

For, Firewall is disabled the same as before.

So, what is your advice for the next step?

Thanks,

================

You need to approach this problem systematically, one small step

at the time. Here are some of the essential steps.

a) Run ipconfig /all on the problem server and post the output. If

you don't post the output then we can't tell what's going on!

b) Run ipconfig /all on a workstation and post the output.

c) While on the server, ping one of the workstations and report

the result.

d) If Test c) fails, start swapping things, e.g. network cable,

hub port, network adapter. You should also drop the speed

of the problem adapter to 10 MBits/s simples.

e) Since you have this persistent notion that the problem is caused

by having the same IP address as the old adapter, select a

different address and see if the problem persists.
