Stops while copying from external hard drive

I was trying to copy my digital pictures from external hard drive to my C:

drive. It copied about 160 of them and then got stuck at a particular picture

and nothing happens for hrs together.

 

Any ideas why that may be happening?

Have you tried copying that "particular picture" all by itself?

Yes and it still gets stuck

If all the files AFTER that one copy, then that file is corrupted.

See if you can open it in your photo editor and save again. In any case,

just copy the ones after. You may lose one but the others should be OK.

Obvious (maybe) things to check:

 

C: drive is FAT32 and problem file is larger than 4GB

C: drive is FAT32 and you have more than about 20,000 files in the

target directory

 

Either of these could stop the copy, although there should be some

kind of error message. Both can be solved by converting the partition

to NTFS, or copying to another partition that's NTFS.
