Hello...

When I want to send mail..I have to reboot the computer before it will send

the mail. The tab is checked in options to "send mail immediately".

Any suggestions as to how I may fix this?

Thanks,

Lee

When you press Send, does it go to the Outbox? Tools | Options |

Connections. Is Hang up after sending & Receiving checked? Uncheck it.

If still no joy, try these three possible fixes one at a time and test.

1: Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant

layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and

causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes

and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V

program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

2: Create a new Outbox:

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of

your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in

Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default

marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable

Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options

Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the Outbox.dbx file and delete it. A new one will be

created automatically when you open OE.

3: You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main

Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.

If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old

identity and delete it.

Try a real mail program like Thunderbird, which has a backup option,

sorting grouping filters and searches.

Try just hitting the send /recv tab after a minute or so

Re: Outlook express..

Crossposted to OE General.

1a. Move any messages that you want to keep out of Sent Items and Deleted

Items folders and into other local OE folders you've created for archiving

(saving) such messages.

1b. Move 99% of your messages in your Inbox folder to other local OE

folders, too.

2. Write down the location of your identity's store

3a. Close OE.

3b. Did you close OE??

4. In Windows Explorer (WinKey+E), navigate to your store folder, find &

delete the files Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx.

To avoid such problems in the future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local

folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently

perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at

http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is

automatically compacting your message store.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause

corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,

and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that

are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans

incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and

email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To

make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep

Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have

the most recent virus definitions.
