Guest Ovidio B. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Greetings, I have one medium AD domain enviornment with 2 DCs , but I want a small portion of my domain computer members to recieve their time from a different NTP source. Is this possible? Basic Q's: 1. Are all members of the domain automatically synced with the DC's? 2. Do all computers have to be synced up with the DC's time to login to the domain? Please advise, thanks a million :)
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Re: NTP Server Question Hello Ovidio B., 1. In a domain you have the PDCEmulator which is the Time source in the domain by default. All other DC's will sync with that and the member servers and workstations will sync with one of the available DC's. 2. Yes, if you have a time difference it can happen that you can not join new machines for example. Why will you use different time sources? You can configure the PDCEmulator to sync with more then one external time source. Guest Ovidio B. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Re: NTP Server Question Hi Meinolf Weber, Thank you for you responce. The reason that I would like to use a different time source is because a small number of people need their App servers to be set w/west coast time for some of their application automated jobs: sending newsletters at a PST time instead of EST time ect. I'll search online on how to setup the PDC Emulator to sync up with different time sources, but for now you could answer it just in case ;) and i'll pick ur brain a little: 1. How do i setup the PDCEmulator to sync up with a differnet time source? 2. How do I configure the new time sources with those computers? 3. Can a group policy be created to point these guys in a particular OU to a different NTP server 4. Well setting up a server option scope in DHCP work? Guest Ovidio B. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Re: NTP Server Question Heres a better question: If i manually set the server to a "different" time zone, ie, Central time, will the PDC emulator try to bring it Eastern Standard Time IF the PDC is set to east coast? Guest Ovidio B. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Re: NTP Server Question Found the answer, thanks for your help. What do you think is the best solution, GP, DHCP, or Manually? : On Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003/Vista/2008, if the server that gets contacted is in a different time zone than the client, the server's time is displayed in the time zone of the client (in other words if I'm in Pacific Time on my NT machine, but I happen to authenticate with a server in the Eastern Time zone, the time on my local machine will be set to Pacific time). However, on Win 3.x,95 and 98 machines in the Pacific time zone syncing to an Eastern time zone server would have their time set to Eastern time.
