Network Places issues

I have two issues on my XP Pro SP2 desktop that I'm having a hard time

resolving. In both these cases, my XP Pro SP2 laptop is working as expected.

1) Every place is shown as "The Internet" or "Unspecified" even though most

of the "Internet" links are really shares on the local network. Why? How

does it decide what is "Local" and what is "Internet"? I've rerun the "setup

a home or office network" wizard and no change.

2) UPnP devices are not showing up at all. I've run hide/show icons for

networked UPnP devices and confirmed both the discovery and UPnP services

are running.

I've googled and found lots about icons in the system tray...

XP - Help -My Network Places overview says that it means YOUR pc is

accessing it via URL format - whether local network or remote (

\\192.168.1.1\share or \\dickspc\share ): that it - it is NOT local ( if

it were on YOUR PC, I read that as stating that it would show - YOUR

resource name for it )
