It seems that Microsoft has installed the Browser Choice application on my desktop PC, but it has not installed correctly. The notification page has two links but niether the Click Here button nor the OK button responds. My browser is disabled so I am not able to connect to the internet. I have not been able to reinstate it as System Restore has been disabled, I am not able to copy and paste files, the browser choice application cannot be removed through the add/remove software routine, so basically my PC is now completely useless.

I am running Windows XP home edition, and all was woking ok until the patch was installed when I shut down last evening. Anybody else had this problem? - any ideas welcome, thanks:mad:

Are you suggesting that the Windows Browser Choice download (KB976002) has disabled your browser and system restore? Was system restore working prior to the update? The browser choice update serves no purpose other than to comply with recent court cases in certain countries.

It is my understanding that it only contains a series of links and explanations and should not have any major effect on your operation. (However I have not lived in Europe for some time so I am not all that sure of that.) I am wondering whether some other malware may have found its way in at or around the same time.

I understand that the application requires that you make a positive choice of browsers offered by the application, and automatically disables Internet Explorer until it is selected as the users preferred browser. Because the application did not install correctly I am not able to navigate to the Browser Choice page to make my selection, and IE is disabled.

Wrong, it places a shortcut on the desk top that links you to different browsers, should you wish to try or use one, If it were to disable your original browser then you would not be able to connect to the internet to download your chosen Browser

also just by deleting the short cut you negate any need to do anything?

also this update was released in February and I haven't seen it since !!

here is the link to the Microsoft Info page about it

What is the Browser Choice update? (KB976002) - Microsoft Windows

What you are describing sound suspiciously like malware of some type !!
