Hi, my preferences are set to notify and then I choose downloads.

I've not recieved any notification for a long time. Can someone tell me

when last critical update was? (am not concerned with office critical

updates, will explain below.)

Is there a newsletter which tells when critical updates are available. I

did try to sign up for one, and was impossible, buggy i take it, didn't

work..but if anyone knows of one, would love to know. It's impossible to

find which newsletter or email notice informs of such..the whole world knows

before i do when there's a critical update available.. and i cant find anyway

to find out when.

Using windows update at microsoft where they scan the computer I have a

problem there as well, so not sure if am missing critical updates.

Okay, here's the long story. I saw at one point update for office. (My

preferences are set to notify but I'll download.)

On installing, it first asked, update or install new version of outlook

express? I thought sure, why not..

Well, I have an old hotmail email..and as is old, is grandfathered in where

can recieve and send via outlook. (any newer than that no longer allows

such.) So, when outlook was installed, I could not enable hotmail (the one

addy) to send recieve via outlook.

So without that, didn't want outlook.. So I restored sys..ugh, which in

itself is a problem, but it got rid of the new outlook.

After restore, I screen shot all my settings in outlook which gave hotmail

paramaters needed for mail settings. Which by the way was shown as an option

with the updated outlook and I selected, but did not work..so basically if I

have new outlook, I can not use that hotmail addy with it. (as again, while

mine is grandfathered in, appears new outlook doesn't recognize is okay as

does not allow me to configure it, or if i do, does not work.)

So though, after getting the parameters again, (after the restore) I let it

update again, let it install outlook again, and same problem, wouldn't accept

the hotmail in outlook.. So again, restored..ugh again. to get rid of outlook.

Due to this, me saying yes twice to update outlook, microsoft does not

prompt if I want outlook updated, it thinks I do, as said twice before yes,

so is set in some file on sys somewhere, and so on updating office auto

updates to newer outlook, which you can see due to such, I can't update

office at all. (As I dont want outlook updated due to not letting me use that

hotmail thru it.)

So, I keep getting prompted to update office 2003. I keep saying no. I

remove the x, tell it not to ask again, and finally after 3 or so times of

that, it stopped asking me.

So, though am worried as not been getting any notification of any other

critical updates for xp etc. So, I go to the update and let it scan my

system. Now it runs like 5 minutes rather than 1, and gives message,

something like you refused 2 criticals, remove the block or whatever.

I'm not going to do that (as it's referring to the office updates.)

So, I'm not sure if due to that, it's not showing me any criticals at all.

My last updates were:

IE 7 Feb 13, 08

same date for xp

So am concerned, as has been some time..

Thanks for reading this long story and for your help and replies.

I've no idea how to subscribe or change notifications if need to, etc.

Take care,

blessings,

casey

It is usually the second Tuesday of the month.

Manually go to the site and get your updates.

They are there waiting for you.

There were no XP critical updates this month. There was only the malware

removal tool and four updates for Office products. The place to find out

about security updates is:

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/bulletins/200803.mspx

You can subscribe to the monthly newletter and the bulletins through links

there.

Re: critical updates question/and related questions and problems w

Hi Thanks for writing. Yes, I do go to the site, let it scan sys, and so the

concern is, due to problem I wrote of that it's not working, the manual.

Another just replied thought that none out this month. But yes, when I was

checking for updates was doing it manually, going to microsoft and letting it

scan..but I get a problem message reply; which is explained in my post.

Thanks so much for writing.

take care,

casey

I knew I had more than that... but it would appear maybe I've found a

problem with the installation of KB936181 - which is AGAIN available

for download (for the 4th time... no errors previously that I saw)..

I'm following the instruction as to how to install that so it will

stop RIGHT NOW:-)

You can get rss feeds with the rss link on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/rss/default.mspx

and you can subscribe to the newsletter at:

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/secnews/default.mspx

The newsletter link is the Get Our Newsletter menu item in the left pane on

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/bulletins/200803.mspx

which I gave you. You probably clicked something else. Anyway, good luck.

The Security Center page states that there were no critical updates for the

OS in March. You've got something leftover from before, of course. Are you

installing manually rather than from WU? That usually resolves the stubborn

ones for me.

There have been mucho problems with KB936181 being repeatedly offered

even though the system says it was properly installed previously.

I just went through the fix MS spelled out and it worked. KB936181

is installed and WU ain't offering it again.

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

|

| Take care,

| blessings,

| casey

Re: critical updates question/and related questions and problems w

Hi Colin, Thanks for replying.. I do get to the page okay, and can see to

subscribe to the monthly on the left (thanks, as didn't see that before.)

What I want is email notification instantly of critical patches, and now I

can't find where microsoft offers it. But when get to it, brings to another

vendor and no offer at all of instant notificiation via email or IM which

microsoft says they do. So, sorry can't find where I found that bit, but

looking for place to sign up for email notify so I know right away.. and

appears is available, tho again, can't find that page now, ugh, but it just

links to a vendor which sells products and none talk about email notify of

updates.. so thats what I'm looking for.

I'm glad you gave me the monthly one, is great, so at least I'll know for

sure once a month. And when go to subscribe to that, they show a list of

other newsletters available, none being instant email notify.

Thanks so much for all you gave me. If you ever happen upon instant email

notification of criticals let me know..

Thanks for all your help! (((((HUGS)))))

Re: critical updates question/and related questions and problems w

Thank you TaurArian!

The link to get bulletins appears geared to it professionals.. and doesn't

quite say will notify of critical updates though is ormay be contained.

Perhaps that would be the one to subscribe to, but I'm not a tech

professional, just a home user.. but i can handle tech bulletins :)

And mainly looking for email notify from microsoft when patches are

available and perhaps the link you gave me, which does notify of things

contains that; it just doesn't note it..

Thank you for writing..

casey :)
