For some time now my Laptop (vista home premium) has had an issue where every so often for no apparent reason I would hear the usb Duh Dum! unplug sound and if I was watching a video (on or offline) at the time, the video would continue to play but I would have no sound. Also for about 10-20 seconds after the usb sound my wireless mouse would stop working.

Because this issue only happened occasionally I put up with it but now it's got worse. About 2 weeks ago I decided to do a system restore back to factory settings. It all went fine with no problems but then the above problem started again, I would have thought a system restore would have corrected the mistake but obviously it hasn't. The thing is, it's happening more often now, at least once a day usually twice. Also, when it happens now the laptop shuts itself down and restarts. Before it shuts down though I get a blue screen and at the bottom of the screen it has a countdown of numbers and it says memory dump.

When the computer restarts itself I have lost any changes or work I have done since I turned my laptop on and it's really frustrating, yesterday I had to write a long letter because it disappeared after this issue happened.

Please help, I have no idea what it could be. I've looked in my device manager because it seems to effect usb but all drivers are up to date and I have no yellow triangles anywhere.

Hello there.

Update to the latest service pack.

I would download and run your laptops chipset from the makers website.

If this dont cure the issue your USB maybe damaged or due to fail.

Since this seems to be a random event I would suspect the beginning of a hardware failure or a thermal issue. If you feel comfortable digging into the guts try reseating the RAM, hard drive and optical drive and any other cards or devices that are accessable. How about dirt buildup enough to prevent the fan from cooling properly. Try blowing the thing out with compressed air. I'm amazed how much dust can accumulate in PC's that seem to be in a clean environment. While you have the RAM sticks out clean the contacts with 90% isopropyl alcohol.

Hope this helps.

One other minor point, you mention you are using a wireless mouse, if the battery is going flat in the mouse, that could cause random disconnection of the mouse, thereby giving you the USB disconnection sound.

That may not be the cause of your other problems though, so continue with the advice about checking for dust etc.

Nev.

Thanks for the advice. I will take the thing apart and give it a good clean. I remember the last laptop I had, I'm a smoker and I often smoke while i'm working on my laptop. Anyway, after about 6 months since I bought it I opened it up to fit a new fan because the one inside wasn't moving. I was absolutly shocked at how much dust, dirt and fluff had built up around the fan. It turned out I didn't need a new fan in the end, I just needed to unblock all this THICK tobacco dirt and it worked perfectly again.

Anyway back to my current issue, I give it a good clean. I'll go to the makers site and download all the latest firmware. Fingers crossed it will be okay.

let you know how I get on.

Thanks again
