CHANGING ICON

ON DESKTOP

Normally I right click, choose Properties, and then choose Change Icon.

However, some items do not have a Change Icon option. How would I change the

icon in that case?

Thank you,

Barry Karas

PS I have Windowa XP with SP2.

Some shortcuts are defined in the registry, e.g. here:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

or in

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\

In this location you'll find a key such as

{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

for the Recycle Bin. To change its icon, you need

to search HKCR\CLSID for this key until you find a

value named "Default Icon". There is usually one for

the machine and one for the current user. Changing

it is not a trivial process and one that is not recommended

for the novice.

Re: Changing Icon on Desktop

You can change the My Computer, My Documents, My Network Places, Recycle Bin[full],

Recycle Bin[empty] by right clicking on the desktop-properties-customize desktop &

click on 1 of these choices, then click the radio button for "change icon" & then

browse to where you have the icons stored that you want to use .

I found the icons for Vista online, so I stored them in My Documents, in a folder

that I created & now have all of those now showing as the ones on Vista, except the My

Network Places (which I don't use anyway) .
