We'll I've just came on the computer today and the screen has got a tinge of yellow to it which wasn't there yesterday....I've just done an auto setup on the monitor via clicking the buttons which generally sorts out anything problems to no avail...

The computer runs windows xp, the monitor is an old bog standard medion 15 inch...me thinks it is...

Any ideas?

From what you describe I assume you are referring to an older CRT monitor. The kind that looks like an old TV. The simplest solution is to just make sure that your cable is firmly connected and that there are no bent pins on the connector. Believe it or not that is the most common cause of color loss.

Of course it may well be that there is a fault in one of the tubes in the old monitor. If that is the case, based on current pricing it is time for an upgrade. The best test is to simply try another monitor that you know to be working.

OOPs silly me...forgot to mention it's a LCD screen...one of the first that came out I dare say it's that old...I've checked teh wires and they seem to be firmly in place...you think the screen might be damaged?

Actually it really makes little difference other than the CRT thing. :) If you remove and check the cable (no bent pins) and it remains the same once reconnected the likelihood it is a fault in the monitor. On the other hand it could be an issue with the graphics card as well. I am not the greatest hardware expert in the world but it seems to me that the only way to test this is by process of elimination.

The simplest component to eliminate is the monitor. It is also the moist likely source. Do you have access to another monitor even on a short term loan?

I can ask around however it might be a week untill I can check the computer with another monitor to see if it's the monitor or not...In the meantime I'll have a closer look at the cable plugged in the back of it...

Sorry, if I had a long enough cable I would be glad to check it for you. :D But absent a cable problem I would bet on the monitor rather than the graphics card. That being said you could also try replacing the cable as well. Just make sure you are checking the connection both at the PC and the monitor.
