Guest Anne Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 The hard drive crashed on the server of one of my clients and upon reinstallation, the IT person did not re-create the domain because it was too much work and he wants to wait until Small Business Server 2008 is out to reconfigure the server. Now the server is in a different workgroup than the workstations and it is creating big problems with permission and access, but I am running into a wall trying to get him to change it. His reasoning for making the change from a domain to a workgroup was that if he configured the server as domain again, he would have to redo all the workstations. Am I wrong in assuming that if he had configured the new hard drive with the same domain and users as before, the workstation should have just found the server again, just as they did before? I searched the net and found nothing about a possible release date for SBS 2008. Does anyone believe this is going to happen soon?
Guest lforbes Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 RE: Windows Server 2003 configuration question Hi, Is this the only server in the domain? If so then the Active Directory domain is gone and the workstations will have to be un-joined from the dead domain and re-joined to the new domain. Domain names are set via GUID not common name. However, there are instances where you can create computer account names in the new domain and "sometimes" the workstations of the same name will find the domain controller. However, I certainly have not found it reliable enough to depend on it. How is everything running without a domain? How do users login? In my domain users login to the domain. Without a domain they have no access. Sounds odd to me your opinions of the IT person. Waiting for a new OS to come out with all the bugs and issues that belong to that seems a bit far-fetched. I never upgrade in an working environment until the OS has been out for a year and has been FULLY tested. Especially seeing as the jump from 2003 to 2008 seems as large as the jump from NT to 2000. Guest Paul Weterings Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 configuration question This sounds just plain crazy. You'd even be better off running at least all the systems in the same workgroup. (which is still silly) Just out of curiosity: about how many machines are we talking here? Seems to me that the current situation is causing much more work than recreating the domain (which by the way, unless you have more DC's or a decent backup, you will need to do as Lara pointed out). / ) Regards, / /_________ _|__|__) Paul Weterings / (O_) __/ (O_) ____(O_) Anne wrote: > The hard drive crashed on the server of one of my clients and upon > reinstallation, the IT person did not re-create the domain because it was too > much work and he wants to wait until Small Business Server 2008 is out to > reconfigure the server. > Now the server is in a different workgroup than the workstations and it is > creating big problems with permission and access, but I am running into a > wall trying to get him to change it. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 configuration question Hello Anne, If this was the only DC and you do not have an actual backup from the system state, you are lost and have either, to rebuild the domain and join the workstations again to the new domain, even if i thas the same name because the SID from the domain is diffferent from the old domain and so the clients/users can not authenticate against it or you have to bring all workstations and the server to the same workgroup and have to create on the server and the workstations ALL user accounts with the same password to use shares etc. Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > The hard drive crashed on the server of one of my clients and upon > reinstallation, the IT person did not re-create the domain because it > was too > much work and he wants to wait until Small Business Server 2008 is out > to > reconfigure the server. > Now the server is in a different workgroup than the workstations and > it is > creating big problems with permission and access, but I am running > into a > wall trying to get him to change it. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 configuration question Hello Anne, Date roomers are august 2008 but not decided from all discussions even from the product team. Guest Anne Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 configuration question It also find it crazy and I do agree with Laura would also wait with SBS 2008. There is only one server, 7 accounting workstations and 7 engineering workstations. The system is really bad. I do software support and accounting supervision. I am just so frustrated with this situation. According to the IT, he is just saving the company money by not doing the setup twice. We seem to be in a tuck of war on who is right about what should be done. I realize now, that he his right, it will be a lot of work. In the mean time, none of the files are on the server are protected, anyone can open any file on the server (I don't know how he did that). However, files on the local C drive (my access program files) I cannot be accessed at all or replace with a new version unless I dial each individual workstation. Data backups cannot be run from a workstation anymore because of permission issues. Your answers have given me some insight and I will pursue my endeavor to get the problem fixed. Guest lforbes Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 configuration question I don't understand how installing a new domain is going to take any time with 14 workstations? Now if we were talking 500 like I have then that is a different story. I re-image 14 machines in about 2 hours. I reimage all 500 every year so that is nothing. Installing the OS takes a few hours but running dcpromo and making it a domain takes about 30 minutes max? It really sounds like the IT guy may not have the knowledge or the skills and that is making him think it is a bigger job than it is. Seems a bit weird to me.
