Replacement for 98 sysmon? I want to monitor modem speed

Hi,

Believe it or not, I just made the jump from 98se to XP.

In 98se there was a simple but nice program to monitor various

system processes. It was called sysmon.exe and one of the things it

could do was monitor the ongoing download speed of the modem.

It was quite customizable, and I used it constantly. (I also used it

to monitor several other processes.) They were all contained in 1

nice window that I always kept open on the desktop.

The only thing I can find in XP is something called task monitor,

I've played around with it for several hours, and imho it SUCKS!.

Without going into details, I absolutely hate it.

Is there another way to constantly monitor modem download speed,

in graph form?

Is there a third-party addon that can do this?

I think sysmon.exe was great. And this new XP task monitor

stinks!

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Dave, most people like XP. A vast majority. Sure its got its flaws,

and I don't want to start a war, Linux, Vista, etc., or etc., but XP is

still the top runner. You've jumped about, what 8 years in software

all in one night. Yes, you'll miss some old tools, and like everyone

has done for years, we have found 3rd party software to fill the holes.

I don't think Microsoft ever took a pole and asked us what we want in

the next version. If they did, I missed the email!!!

Have you looked at System Explorer, or SysInternalSuite, or programs like

that?

Since you responded to me, be it accidental or on purpose, I say, yes, I

have seen those sites, and more. I've found a good number of free

utilities, even have a few outdated ones that I still prefer and they

still run. Probably why I'm hung on XP and don't want to migrate yet to

Vista. It works and I've got the tools.! What else do I need? It

ain't broke.

Well, I just caught your thread and thought it easiest to respond to it so I

wasn't directly responding to you, but figured it wouldn't matter. :-)

Incidentally, I'm with you on the XP vs Vista thing. Although there are

some things I still like better in Win98SE (perhaps most of all, being much

more in complete charge of the operating system, LOL).

But I'm sure I've missed some other ones too. So I expect you can find

what you're looking for.

But there are SOME things you won't be able to find for WinXP, such as being

able to run SFC and get a nice log file, AND being able to tell the

operating system whether or not it's ok to replace "such and such" DLL.

Nope, that's taken away in WinXP.

"We will control the horizontal....we will control the vertical..." ("we",

being MS).

Hi Bill,

I've been using XP for a little over a week now.

I can't believe how much more complex the OS is.

You are right: M$ controls everything, and hides a lot of it as

well.

Talk about bloat!

I don't think I'll ever go to Vista.

By the way, I've found 6 different programs that are supposed

to monitor my downloading speed. I'll be trying them out over the

next few days. (Your 2 suggestions plus 4 others.)

Thanks again.

Sure. Glad to be of help.

Just FYI, Dave, it's taken me *quite* a few hours (a severe understatement)

to tame this Win XP beast, to even get it "somewhat close" to being as lean

and mean as Win98SE.

(But as for Vista and ITS bloat (egads) - well, that's not even printable,

for me :-)

But I will say one or two things on XP's behalf, despite the bloat: :-)

It's a hell of lot more stable than Win9x (i.e: I haven't run into blue

screens yet, but I'll keep tryin and let u know), and it has a lot more

software - and USB - support.

There is also PERFMON.EXE which ships with all NT derived systems, I think,

and can do many wonderful things - just enter "perfmon" in the Run box

(that's Start -> Run).

Re: Replacement for 98 sysmon? I want to monitor modem speed

And FWIW - Perfmon on Vista is improved.
