Hi and Welcome Scarletto165

even when using safe mode they do not work or even move

So they work until windows starts?

Do you have a Windows XP Disk?

have you tried from the F8 Safe mode menu, last known good configuration, or failing that the Directory Services Restore Mode

Also it would help if you could tell us what you did or happened just before this fault appeared ;)

Thank you,no the keyboard and mouse do not work at any time. The computer had suffered and recovered from a major crash. I have the XP Disc, ive tried F8 and nothing moves or works (mouse-keyboard) Ive a feeling that after the crash something wasnt quite right, and either got worse or well just packed in.

And its a month out of warranty, which is sods law!!

Cheers

If you don't have a PS/2 Keyboard as JB suggests (Round plug) try disconnecting the mouse and the keyboard and if available plug the keyboard into a different USB Port, (Give the connectors a sharp blow), and try booting with just the keyboard.

also do you know how to get into the bios settings, press del or F10 when prompted at the splash screens

Thank you, tried what you suggested but no joy. Do not have round plug keyboard or mouse, so will e-bay for them. Yes i can find how to get into the BIOS.

Also on the screen when loading besides saying found new USB Keyboard-mouse, it also says found new hardware USB Composite device.

Thanks for your help, ive a ton of stuff on that computer that i need to get off (for work!!!!!)

OK if you have a XP Disk and can get into the Bios to set the primary boot device as DVD you can do a repair install of XP

ok hope this isn't to late but you can try ctrl+alt+del, failing that eject the disk, failing that fraid its the reset button or hard shutdown,

Im sure that saving your settings and preferences is an option you can say no to, but maybe not been along time, basically if a repair instal is not working their is only one thing left, but their are a number of options to get the data off the drive

Thanks i did shut it down, however on restart it goes straight into the setup and starts the process again, however it always hangs at the 2 minutes mark. So id say its more drastic measures, thank you for your help, did send a donation across but my paypal address is different that the address im on here with :)

Hi scarletto. It appears that you made the donation on April 30 but you weren't logged in at the time so we didn't know it was you. I have corrected that and moved you to the Donating user group.

Thanks.

Hi the disc is a Windows XP home edition disc, licenced for distribution only with a new PC, includes service pack 3 version 2002.

Hi and thanks, the disk seems fine then and should be no reason why a repair cannot work. It is strange why it gets into the first two minutes and then hangs at that.

I will have to leave you with my friend Match, he may know a trick or two that I don't, however we may have to eventually go to a full system reinstall. That of course will wipe off all data now held on the hard drive.

So with that in mind have you previously backed it up?

If so where to? If an external hard drive or perhaps DVD or CD disks fine.

If however there is stuff on the drive not backed up that you want to retrieve, there are ways to get at it if needed, just ask for help in that direction should it prove you need to do a full system reinstall.

That's the only way forward I can see, However as Nev said you will loose all data on the disk. However as I said earlier and Nev states , before doing that their are ways to get your files and folders off First.

My Favourite way is to remove the HDD and plug it into a different PC as a second drive, however their are a few other ways depending on what you have available.

One that I am researching and looking into at the moment is using Linux however I have very limited experience with this method so I am reluctant to advise you on this but here is an article on it
