Steady State Validation required

Oh great.

Late, but not completely lost, I just read about "Steady State" and jumped

over to MS downloads to try it out. Validation required. OK, I have a number

of legal XP systems in my home each very well PAID for (though I am having

problems making ends meet, I am glad Bill is using his money to help the

world population survive). I allow the download, run Validation, and it tells

me it is an absolete version.

Can someone out there that understands this stuff and the reasons as to why

we deal with it please let me know how I should go about then getting

validation to work so I can get Steady State?

You only have "a number of legal XP systems"? That implies that some

are legal and some are not.

The home page for SteadyState

has a FAQ that mentions which versions of Windows are supported and

system requirements. Also, under the "Resources" link, there is a link

to their TechNet forums where you might get better answers from a

community more focused on that particular application.

How so? It implies no such thing. Note that the OP did not, like you,

use the word "only".

"some" is not "all". Learn English (British or American flavor, your

pick).

The OP didn't use the word "some" either. Learn to read.

Microsoft is aware that this sometimes and has free support available.

Unfortunately, I can't find my notes about it right now.

Re: Steady State Validation required

Ahhhhh, uhg. I can see the problem in where this went off track, as I did not

consider the reading of what I wrote as to imply "some were and some were not

legal", but what was intended was my degree of frustrarion that after buying

the same OS for each of the computers I use over and over again, none of

which I use simultaneously for I just don't have enough arms, hands, eyes and

certainly enough brains, I am running into a wall trying to get what I paid

for - that the "validation" tool was keeping my computer from downloading the

software - guilty until proven innocent. Does that help?

"I allow the download, run Validation, and it tells me it is an absolete

version."

Um, doesn't the Microsoft download site require validation BEFORE they

let you download the file? Their download page has a "Continue"

(Validation Required)" button before you can even start the download.

That's why I figured that you already had the download and THEN got a

validation popup during the install or maybe when you tried using the

program. Maybe "allow the download" means you haven't started it yet

and got stuck at the intervening validation step.

When I do the download at their web site and get past the validation

step, and then abort the download dialog, I get a web page with a retry

link to the file, which is:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/f/4/af4fca6d-1202-4c30-a1bc-853e9a166695/SteadyState_Setup_ENU.exe

(buried as a parameter in the "Start download" link). That's the same

URL as mentioned in the article that you found. So did using the direct

URL eliminate the validation step? If so, it seems Microsoft's

validation process is flawed on their download site.

I download the VALIDATION software, run it, and get the obsolete message.

Jeez VanguardLH, you sure got some chip on your shoulder to prove me a bad

guy - ease up a bit. I guess you deal with too much of the hind end of things

and it must be shaping your view of the world in a rather nasty way!

So it never was the SteadyState software that had a validation problem.

It was instead the ActiveX control that Microsoft downloads to your host

that complained something was an obsolete version.

In Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage add-ons, look at the following

AX controls:

MUWebControl (MS Update)

WUWebControl (Windows Update)

The first overrides the 2nd. You might not have the 2nd one. Visit the

Windows Update site and go under "Change settings" (this updates your

local WU catalog but requires you visit their web site to do it). Check

if the option to disable MS UPdate is enabled. If so, you get only

Windows Updates but not updates for other Microsoft software.

For some info on WGA validation, read

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage. Have you tried

going to the WGA home page (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/) and

clicking on the link there to validate your instance of Windows? That

will attempt to install an AX control that will check the validation of

your Windows.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/04/26/disable-and-remove-windows-genuine-advantage-notifications-nag-screen/

and other online articles describe how to disable WGA by removing its

component files. I think the main WGA validation files are

LegitControlCheck.dll and LegitControlCheck.inf. A

LegitControlCheck.cab file might be sitting in your browser's temp file

cache, so purge it.

I was curious if the direct link to download the file for SteadyState

completely eliminated the validation step.

Wow. When you choose it's time to give an answer, you sure give a lot of

information! Thank-you; I will have to work on this when I am not being

yelled at by my wife to get my four daughters to bed!

Thank-you!

My first post suggested going to the SteadyState forum because I thought

you were having problems with that software. The problem never actually

involved SteadyState. The rest was found by digging around in IE's

settings and doing some Googling and searching at Microsoft's

knowledgebase support site. Lots to be found there.
