That option is available when you right-click the AVG icon in the System

Tray.

The answer is correct, but you don't need to turn off AVG to defrag.

I think it's a very good idea. This way an automatic update or scan

can't run. IIRC, turning off the screensaver before a defrag is a good

idea, too.

Windows XP defrag is not sensitive to those problems like Windows 9x was.

Also, you should know the AVG update and scan schedule times and be able to avoid them.

With AVG antivirus Free Edition 7.5 there is a single Automatic update

scheduled every day and there is no way from within the "control center" to

disable it from happening unfortunately. You could disable AVG from running

at startup using MSConfig and then restart every time before running defrag.

You can disable Resident Shield inside "Control Center" with

View|Components|Resident Shield . Uncheck the box "Turn on AVG Free Resident

Shield protection". Disabling of real-time scanning is unnecessary when

running disk defragmentation anyway.
