How can I tell if a graphics card is compatible with my PC?

Hello all! I'm interested in upgrading my computer over the summer, and I'm just starting at looking at some hardware. I'm mainly interested in upgrading my Video Card, with the possibility of upgrading my PSU to.. you know.. run the Video Card.

 

I need direction, I don't know what is compatible, or what isn't, my budget is around $300.00 for the entire collection. I will be using this Graphics Card for video games (Sims 3, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft etc.) I would like a graphics card that can run all 3 of those at max settings if possible.

 

Here is my specs:

Microsoft Windows XP

Home Edition

Version 2002

Service Pack 3

 

Dell Inspiron 530

Intel® Pentium® Dual CPU

E2180 @ 2.00GHz

1.20 GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM

 

Current Video Card: Low-end Intel GMA video card (trust me, it sucks)

PSU: 350Watts.

If you upgrade that PSU you to around a 500 watt and then you could run an equivilent of a GT 9 serise.
