networking connection issue

Hi there first time on a forum ever so hope some one can offer a bit of help.

 

I have an airport express connected by ethernet cable to a belkin 54g wireless router and also have a ralink wireless n usb adapter connected through my compaq mini . this gives 3 connections but all say limited or no connectivity . I feel like Merlins ,s apprentice and wish i

had asked for help sooner. So would be over the moon if any one can tell me the best way to put it right.

Hello and welcome.

 

Lets try the simplist of things first.

 

Turn off the router and turn off the computer.

 

Turn on the router and then turn on the computer/laptop.

 

Hopefully this should kick in the connection.

There maybe a IP adress conflict.

 

Did you follow the setup instructions on the Airport Express disk?

Are you able to disconnect the Airport experess and the Belkin USB adaptor.

 

Now you have a main computer connected to the Wireless router?

 

Then your compact mini was wireless connection?

 

Or have I got this completely wrong?

 

I just need you to connect the compaq mini via cable to the wirless router and see if it gets a connection.

 

Please check exceptions or allow list in your Firewall settings.

hi airport express set up with green light! have taken the ethernet cable and put it into the compaq from the belkin router good connection! taken out usb adapter and disabled it wireless still as before unpluged airport express so now saying not connected . my tea is burning so i will check back with you later

Could you possibly test the USB wireless adaptor on another computer or laptop and make sure it can connect.

This is bugging me though.Do you have the wirless router and the USB adaptor connected to the same machine?

I did have ! uninstalled the adapter as the connection gave out after about 5 mins and would,nt reconect so back to just ethernet cable from belkin router

If you had both the USB wireless adaptor and the cable connected at the same time to the same computer then there is the problem.

 

It is conflicting IP adress.

 

The airport express is only a WIFI utility.

 

You have one main computer connected directly to the wirless router.

 

Then all other computers can connect to the wirless router either by cable or wirless cards.

 

As I am new to the airport express I am reading up on it.

 

Extended range.

You can use AirPort Express as a wireless bridge to extend the range of your primary base station.2

I am also questioning if your wireless router is compatable.

 

I would wait for one of the more knowing to pop on and see if they can help in the mean time I am still trying to find what the issue maybe.

Starting to make a bit more sense now. airport express running air tunes to i book without problem . compaq not picking up airport express at all. compaq still not picking up wireless from belkin at all . think you are right about compatibility . Windows message saying ip address conflict when i put compaq on today. So you are on the right track

What operating system is your main computer and Compaq mini running?

 

I think we need to check what IP they have on each machine.

Hi compaq running on xp home. Not got a main computer as such . only running it through the ethernet cable as cant connect to wireless. Running an ibook through the wireless without problem it is on leopard .

The compaq needs to remain wired to the router.Do not plugin the wirless adaptor.

 

Ok on the back of the router there is a reset button,looks like a tiny hole.Push a blunt item like a pen nib into it so it presses the hideen reset button.

 

Now restart the compaq and now see if you have a connection issue or IP conflict.

Hi Jelly Bean reset router it crashed and froze for last 5 hours eventualy came back after 11 pm. No conflict pop up and no wireless either

That should not of happened with the router.

 

I did ask the boys for help on this but no one has jumped in to help.

I think i was a bit heavy handed with the pen and jammed the reset in . Once i put the password back in then no probs.

Wireless back on now on compaq ,it is saying unprotected net work i know the password but dont know how to set it ! any idea,s
