Granting shared folder permissions

2 XP computers using different domain names, Dfw and Home.

On Dfw is a computer Computer1 and I want to share its My Documents so that

a user on Computer2 in Home can see it.

So on Computer1, I open Windows Explorer, go down to My Documents, right

click and select Properties and then Sharing.

Share Name -> My Documents

Press Permissions (to give the user on Computer2 rights)

Up pops a Select Users or Groups box that I have no idea what to do with.

No matter what I type in the box at the bottom it refuses to take it.

None of the examples shown work such as Home/MyUser

The "From This Location" button lists Computer1 but nothing else. Since I

can't select Computer2, I can't select users there.

What am I doing wrong? I'm an Administrator on both boxes.

From your description, I assume that the computers have Windows XP

Professional. Create matching user accounts (same user name and

password) on both computers. Permissions that you define for a user

on the local computer apply to the same user who connects over the

network from the other computer. Ron Lowe and I have written a web

site with full details:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm

BTW, Dfw and Home are workgroup names, not domain names.

Correct.

I see. Question about that. Computer1 is set to require a new password

every 30 days. If I enter a duplicate account on Computer2, won't I have to

manually edit the password on Computer2 to match Computer1 every 30 days?

That will be more trouble than it's worth if so, especially with multiple

computers on my network.

Thank you. That looks excellent!

> BTW, Dfw and Home are workgroup names, not domain names.

Ouch, that might be part of the problem. One is my work laptop that I'm

pretty sure is a domain Dfw, but I do think you're right about Home being a

workgroup as I have no domain controller at home.

So will mixing workgroups and domains work?

A domain-member computer wil not allow access to its shares when away from

the domain.
