Hello wise ones! Really hoping you can help.

Have been given a Toshiba Equium A300D laptop, with windows XP home edition.

It simply will not connect to the internet, the logo on the bottom right states that it is connected and online but when trying to load a webpage it shows the usual 'page can not be loaded' or it flashes up an error message 'Internet explorer can not be displayed'.

Modem and connection works fine for our desktop.

Any ideas how to help a novice out?

Thanking you in advance :)

I'm not a network guy but often times your internet provider will help you as it is in their best interest to do so.

Beyond that others may want more information. I can think of a couple things:

Who is your ISP?

How do you connect?

Hard wired?

Wireless?

Make, model and number of your modem and routers?

Have you tried a different browser like Firefox to rule out a browser issue?

What AV do you have?

When did this problem happen? Have you done anything prior to this?

Did you try a System Restore?

Let the techs and members know please.

Thanks Randy, ok....

ISP: Virgin BB

Connect: Using an ethernet cable, not a fan of wireless.

Modem: Motorola SB5051E

This laptop originally had Windows Vista when with previous owner, he installed Windows XP Home on it after it became infected. Since this, it has never been online. He doesn't have original service CD and has probably thrown it out, knowing him!

Normally when this occurs it is a product of improper internet settings. Make certain that your TCP/IP settings are set to obtain addresses automatically. Since you are connected to a modem by cable make certain that the internet light on the modem is on.

Just to elaborate on what BeeCeeBee has suggested:

Try one or both of these and see if your connection comes back.

Click Start...Run... Type in (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns then click the 'enter' key. You'll get a confirmation that the flush was successful.

remember that there is a space between the g and the /

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :

Click on Start... Control Panel, select the 'Network and Internet Connections' category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually 'local area connection' for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the 'Internet Protocol' (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says 'Obtain DNS servers automatically'.

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

If that doesn't get it, try this one:

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd

A dos Window will appear.

Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset

Click on the 'enter' key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.

XP installed = non working Internet = lack of correct drivers???

kezzab should check the proxy server setting from the Internet Options-Connections Tab,always an obvious one

you should go to the Toshiba website and find the XP LAN drivers for your laptop

after that you should find your ip, gateway and dns settings to be sure it is hooked up to your modem.

guesing your on virgin cable but cant find that modem please recheck the model number like these
