:confused:Hi all---

I have Windows XP Professional and have been able to burn CD's with no problem whatsoever. That is, up until a month ago when I installed a new printer (HP Deskjet). I had to install the printer manually because the instruction CD that came with it had two big cross-shaped cracks in it (which I didn't notice it until after several attempts) and I'm wondering if that did some damage to the writer, or could it be because both the writer and the printer are on the same drive? All I know is, whenever I put in a blank CD to burn, the light flashes green for a few seconds, then flashes amber and it comes up on screen "Error--driver is not ready".

I've tried several good quality CD's, and unplugging (but not disconnecting) the printer. I don't really want to disconnect the printer because it was a pain to install. By the way I can still play CD's fine in the CD-ROM, nothing wrong there.

Can anyone please give me some help?:o Thanks!!

go into device manager and uninstall the CD/DVD rom driver and then reboot, when windows starts again it will automatically detect the driver required from either windows update or the standard drivers installed with windows.

If that doesnt work then we can go further - GOKU did post a 'fix' that I cant seem to find

Hi-- went into device manager and uninstalled the CD/DVD Rom driver and rebooted but nothing came up to say it detected the driver, so now it's uninstalled and it still just blinks amber. How do I install it again?

Ok there are a couple of options here, you can go straight to windows update and look at the optional updates, under hardware there should be one for your CD/DVD rom drive.

If not then you would either need to tell us which computer/lappy make and model you have and I can source one, or you can click install driver in device manager and it will load the 'standard' drivers

I couldn't find optional updates in windows updates. Why can't find anything on this computer?!

Anyway, my computer is an HP Pavilion 7845 (desktop),and the cd writer is CD Writer Plus. Just let me know if you need memory or drive ifo.

Thanks for your patience-- guess I'm more clueless than I thought!! LOL.

Hi, I am assuming that the writer is a separate drive from the CD ROM and not the same piece of hardware?

If so, and considering it is refusing to accept attempts to install drivers for it, I am now suspecting that damaged and cracked CD for the printer may just have destroyed the read write heads. If so then the only cure is a new drive.

Thanks, Nev-- Yes, I think you're right. The writer is a seperate drive from the CD ROM. I had a rotten feeling that damaged CD might have been the culprit. Well, I've learned a valuable lesson: always check a CD before using it. I never thought I would have to worry about a CD that comes with a brand-new product, though (in this case, my new printer). Do you think it would do any good to complain to the manufacturer?

I would definitely complain, and if you can get an independent technician to verify that the drive is broken, and that disk did indeed do the damage, I would put in a claim for costs incurred as well.
