Hi,

Every effort of mine to run the above anti virus system is balked by "user stopped scan".

I am using Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 3.

This happened this morning and I have attempted to run the same after shutting down and re-starting several times.

Can anybody help?

Thanks!!

Corporate versions of AV are meant to be installed on a server and then distributed to client PCs

If you dont have the server then it wont work as it should.

if you do have a server is the above how its been installed?

Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)

Asus P5K premium black pearl

4GB OCZ Reaper 8500

260GTX

Did you do anything yesterday such as install and programs or modify anything in any way?

you should be able to see in the logs who stopped the scan, if its not you then the system has for one reason or another, will it allow you to check for updates?

I do not recall having done anything, besides running the anti virus, which I do almost daily.

A friend tells me that I should remove the anti virus system, as it seems to have been corrupted and re-install anything else but Symantec.

What do you suggest I do?

If the Norton scan is your only issue then uninstalling it and reinstalling it might work. If you can't reinstall it there are other AV options. But as Dalo said something may be stopping the scans including malware.

This link may be of assistance to you if your Norton version is listed. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Symantec home based products are known for being absolutely rubbish compared to even their free competitors versions of AV. Its really up to you as the corporate stuff is actually very good and I use it myself on servers.

Uninstall it and then reinstall it and see if the problem persists (I would recommend that you disconnect from the net while you do this just incase )

If the same thing happens then I would look at an alternative, for home use I dont think you can get better than Nod32 suite. for free use you are looking at either Avast or Avira :)

Sygate is owned by Symantec, but again their Firewall stuff is extremely good

Hope this helps

That is exactly what a friend told me. I removed Symantec and replaced it with MSE. So far so good!

I have had no problems what-so-ever since then, but who knows what is around the corner?

Thanks for all the advice guys.
