I have restored my daughters Acer laptop to the factory settings. This has went ok except that I cannot cannot via the wireless network. I can press the switch at the front and it toggles between wireless network enabled / disabled. But there is no icon on the system tray and when I view network connections via the start menu it does not show a wireless connection.

Can anyone help with this

With factory settings, it's normally better to go wired before you go wireless. I'd check device manager for any exclamation marks and update any necessary drivers while you're 'plugged in'.

Start > Run ..type in...devmgmt.msc ...ENTER

Click the + next to Network Adapters

Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?

If your wireless adapter is shown it should say something like WiFi Link 5100 AGN - is it ?

I am hard wired at the moment and it is working ok. I have looked at the device manager and it has a yellow question mark against the network controller. It is saying that it cannot find the driver for this device (code 28) I dont have any discs so have let it search the internet for a driver but it has not found anything.

The device manager is only showing a question mark against network controller. I have tried the link you gave but I dont know which items to try to download

Click on the arrow next to XP - Drivers and Utilities

I see 4 Wireless options. This is why I asked if there was anything listed in Device Manager.

I have an Acer and mine is Intel.

On this basis alone - try the Wireless_Intel_3945 driver.

If it is not the right one we can delete it and try another.

Thanks for the help. It is now up and running on wireless.

It was the BCM driver that finally worked.

Donation on its way.
