I run Vista Home Premium 32 bit, with the latest updates installed. Recent USB devices (mp3 player, card reader etc) I've bought prompt Windows to ask for drivers which aren't required. The manufacturers tell me no driver is needed, but Windows doesn't recognise the devices without one. The devices install fine on other Windows computers, and the USB ports on my laptop are OK with older devices such as my mouse. Any ideas, please?

depends on the lappy really - did it always have Vista or is it an older lappy and have you put that on?

Have a look in device manager and you will probably find some yellow exclamation marks against the USBs, you will have to visit the lappy manufacturer and install any newer ones that you are using (I would have thought you are using the Windows inbuilt ones which are not ideal for older PCs/Lappys)

Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)

Asus P5K premium black pearl

Their is also the possibility they may not even be listed in device manager, What I would do is to re-install the chipset drivers,

If that don't work I would go through the device manager and Uninstall everything listed under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" (start at the bottom and work up), then reboot the PC, and it should install all the drivers back in for you using the windows drivers, then install the manufacturers chipset drivers again.

Ummmm ... I might be wrong here but I think all hardware devices need drivers to operate. From what I make of your post, I gather that Windows does not actually have any problem identifying the device. It just installs the drivers whereas other computers don't, right?

Actually, all computers locate and install a driver for USB devices the first time it is inserted. However, if you plug it out and reinsert it, Windows won't install the driver a second time.

I probably am missing something here and in the case I am, please elaborate your problem in your next post. :)
