kevh Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Hi Just wondering if anyone knows what happens when changing to Adsl 2+? With pipex adsl1 thomson modem getting 0.7mb ish :( needed wireless so bought Linksys wa 120n adsl2+ modem thinking it would be a little faster possibly but certainly not slower am now getting 0.4mb:(:(:( (wired and wireless) When i set it from auto to adsl2+ in settings wont connect at all. Pipex tech support have suggested changing filter and testing which i'll try later but dont hold out much hope as same one used for old modem  Cheers Kev  Quote Home Pc: Intel i5 - 4460 3.20 ghz 8gb Kingston Hyper-X Fury Dual-DDR3 1600MHz Windows 10 64bit HomeEVGA 960 GTX SSC 2Gb GDDR 5 DX12Corsair VS430watt PSU250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD24" Benq Led screen Work Pc: Quad Q9550 2.83ghz4gb XMS2 DDR2 800mhzAsus P5QL Mobo Windows 7 PremiumPalit GTS250 1GB ddr3 450watt FSP PSU640Gb WD Caviar Blue HD22" Samsung Lcd (1680x1050)
LinkindinkinPark Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 what speed should you get. check here BT Broadband could be your sync rate is down using a router. look for the stats and post them. noise margin etc and post them this page may help ::. Kitz - Get your adsl line stats .:: Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Since I admittedly know little of ASDL2 technology I took a quick look around and see no evidence that "pipex" has rolled it out as a standard. Are the numbers you are relating accurate or is there a misplaced decimal point. Are you getting 7 Megs or .7 Megs? (700kbs) Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
kevh Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 Thanks to you both for replies will try tests tonight hopefully , but after talking to PCW tech guy and pipex support India  I discovered The exchange isnt quite Adsl 2+ yet and is being worked on at the moment even though it was planned for March. Does seem strange still that the old modem is a little faster than the new one unless it is designed for a stronger ADSl 2+ signal and yes point is in the right place i'm afraid :( 450kbps( new ) 700kbps (old) Pipex will let me know when exchnge is changed to adsl2+ Cheers Kev  Quote Home Pc: Intel i5 - 4460 3.20 ghz 8gb Kingston Hyper-X Fury Dual-DDR3 1600MHz Windows 10 64bit HomeEVGA 960 GTX SSC 2Gb GDDR 5 DX12Corsair VS430watt PSU250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD24" Benq Led screen Work Pc: Quad Q9550 2.83ghz4gb XMS2 DDR2 800mhzAsus P5QL Mobo Windows 7 PremiumPalit GTS250 1GB ddr3 450watt FSP PSU640Gb WD Caviar Blue HD22" Samsung Lcd (1680x1050)
BeeCeeBee Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Well all I know is that I have seen download speeds posted by friends in Britain and some of them are pretty fast 20+ megs and some even at 50. Is there no cable provider that you can use that will give you the speed that you want? What you are posting barely qualified as broadband. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Dalo Harkin Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 At the bottom of the second page you posted it says DHCP You have it starting at 192.16.1.100 It should be starting at 192.168.1.1 which is the routers IP address. kevh Posted May 27, 2010 Author Posted May 27, 2010 Dalo , will try later as it on the Home pc and at work at the moment. Dalo Harkin Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Well if your router is dishing out IP addresses, which is what DHCP does.... It could be anything to be honest, Im not familiar with that router so  Routers that have modems built in are fiddly at best, is the router in bridge mode or passsthrough do you know? LinkindinkinPark Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 that 192.168.1.100 that Dalo mentioned is the standard setting for Linksys. all changing it will do is move the ip addresses down the range. DONT set it to 192.168.1.1 - router cannot start giving addresses at that number because its taken. imho leave it alone its the downstream rate shown on pic 1 that determines what is possible did you look your adsl up on bt site? their info is important 2 nearest exchanges 6km how far are you from exchange? long lines are crap to sync to, speedtouch and netgear are best for long lines, its to do with the internal firmware, they tend to sync a slightly higher rate Quote
kevh Posted May 27, 2010 Author Posted May 27, 2010 In pic 1 is that a stepped level that the modem has selected and is it possible to select higher ie 756k as old modem was getting 650-700k from the line. 5.5km from exchange and couldnt use bt checker you listed as all thru pipex. LinkindinkinPark Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 5.5 km is getting marginal.you really need the upstream/downstream stats to be sure theres no way of modding the sync speed, the exchange profile is set by your signal to noise ratio netgear dg834 series can be modded to sync higher by changing signal/noise allowable margin sometimes get from 500kb/s to 650/700 you need some knowhow and firmware from here DGTeam - The Custom DG834XX Series Router Firmware Web Site if you dont have any other line faults you are stuck:( Quote

It was on average 200KB/S faster than the others. I found the netgear a bit of a pain to configure. Yeah thats true, I didnt know linksys started at 192.168.1.100, if thats the case then you may as well just set static IPs and disable DHCP I thought that maybe the options had been changed, so are you saying that the routers IP address on Linksys is 192.168.1.100 Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
kevh Posted May 28, 2010 Author Posted May 28, 2010 thanks for replies i can put up with a little less as doesnt make much differance to every day surfing (running bbc iplayer on full quality is all im missing really ) but just annoyin the newer adsl2+ modem is slower than the older adsl1 modem:confused: do you think i'll do any better when the exchange is ADSL2+ enabled , or is the distance going to knock out any chance of gain?? DSTM Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 ADSL/2 will be faster, however being a distance from the Post Office will slow the download speed down a lot. I was promised up to 20MG and because I am 6 KLMS from the post Office,I can only get 5 MG. So a good Modem/Router is important. LinkindinkinPark Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 @Dalo linksys router ip is 192.168.1.1 but they set the dhcp range starting at 1.100. had a look in the manual and its standard guess thats just how they do it. kinda same as bt and speedtouch setting router ip to 1.254 and dhcp range staring from 1.2, who knows why?? @kev adsl2 could help lots. depends on line noise.exchange profiles line on noise margin, that means less noise more signal = faster.
