Runeasy Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this, i'll try to be as quick as possible:) So I bought an external hard drive a while back to store my family photos on etc as this was all fine untill the usb port became detatched :( I then went to see my local computer supplier and they said the best thing for me to do was buy a new caddy for the device.....so i did, hurray, but no....more problems From what i have read on forums everything connecting my hard drive to the new caddy is connected correctly and the power is working. When i plug it into my laptop it makes that little noise to say that yes it is connected but it doesnt show up in my computer or anywhere for that matter. it is a dynamode 3.5 sata is that makes any difference and my OS is Windows 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys :) M x Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 You will need to reactivate/initalise the disk Go into control panel>system and security>administrative tools>Computer Management>Disk Management (on the left hand side) your drive should be listed there right click on it and I cant remember the exact wording but I think its initialise - just make sure if it asks you to format that you click NO as the data would be lost Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.

Dalo Harkin Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 You need to check the sizes really, when you made a backup was this to another partition of the HDD or is this a branded PC like Dell or HP? Dell or HP actually install a recovery section onto another partition incase your PC needs to be set back to factory settings (virus, OS corruption etc) If you know the size of the HDD you are trying to add that will help as it should be listed. Im not at home right now, but I will post you a screen shot later with some options on you can look here in the meantime Troubleshooting Disk Management: Storage Services; File and Storage Services if you need it doing before I can post a screen shot Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
LinkindinkinPark Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 drive should show straight away. its a 3.5" so it needs plenty of mA from the USB port. does the USB cable have a double connector on one end. if it does connect them both to your computer ports. was the drive encrypted by any chance in the old caddy Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 3.5'' should run off a mains supply not USB 2.5'' can run off USB, I have never seen a 3.5'' run off USB Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Runeasy Posted May 27, 2010 Author Posted May 27, 2010 Hi guys, my usb is running of mains and also connects to the computer with a single usb lead :p i think i made the backup when i first got my laptop so i dont think thats anything to do with my HDD. not sure if it was encypted, maybe? would this change anything? think i may just have to take it to the shop, all this technology baffles my mind x:o Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 What software did you use to do the backup? Have a look in disk management again and take a screen shot or photo and then post it here, dont take it to a PC shop, we can sort this for FREE for you Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
