Guest MarcusB Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 We have Proliant server ML350 G4 and today one mirrored disk crashed. I wonder if I can buy not original HP SCSI and mount it in tray/caddy. If there will be any problem? The socond question is about shares on this server. Server run Windows 2003 server and all user data shared folders are on the seperate raid array. What should I backup in case the system disk crash to have all shares and rights back. MarcusB
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Re: Proliant hard disk crash Hello MarcusB, I assume you used the Smartstart to set up the RAID? Just take out the broken disk and replace with the same new. Replication should start directly and with Array configuration utility you can control the replication process until it is ready. If you use backup software, also the security settin gs will be backed up. The sharename itself not i think. But it is reallyb easey after restore to share the folder again. Guest MarcusB Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Re: Proliant hard disk crash The problems is that on the server is more than 5000 shares. I will not get the original disk before next Friday, thus I do not know if the second disk will survive. Do you know if I can put just Seagate or Hitachi SCSI disk. Does it need to be original one? Guest Meinolf Weber Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Re: Proliant hard disk crash Hello MarcusB, I don't know about other disks. We have in our Proliants for the RAID's always the same kind of disks and also some in spare in kind of problems. But i understand you correct that the broken one is not from the Data RAID? It is the system drive? So i would create first a really good backup and then wait for the disk. If possible think about moving the data to another server. Guest MarcusB Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Re: Proliant hard disk crash I made backup of whole system drive and SystemState but I do not know if shares are included. In the server there is extra raid disks with a lot of shares. MarcusB Meinolf Weber wrote: > Hello MarcusB, > > I don't know about other disks. Guest steve_nsi Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Re: Proliant hard disk crash MarcusB, I've installed other branded drives in those by taking the original out of the sled and mounting a Hitachi or whatever in it's place like what you're saying. It will work but I wouldn't use it as a permanent solution. The drive cache will be disabled since the Compaq RAID will recognize it as not being a Compaq drive and in my experience the drive won't live very long for some reason. I would use this as a temporary solution only. The share info can be exported/imported from the registry. HKLM\System \CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares If you're doing system state backups you should get that back but it may be an all or nothing type of restore depending on your software.
